Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma<\/a> said that Uttarakhand has brought Uniform civil code<\/a> (UCC), it will be implemented across the country and then it will be implemented in Assam also.Talking to media persons he said, \u201cUttarakhand has brought Uniform civil code (UCC), it will be implemented across the country and then it will be implemented in Assam too.\u201d.<\/p>\n

In August last year Assam Assembly passed the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024<\/a> and registration of marriage with a minor is considered a legal offense and the registration of Muslim marriage will be done by the government and not the Qazi.<\/p>\n

Assam passed the Assam Repealing Bill, 2024 in the to abolish the Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935 and passed Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024.<\/p>\n

Sarma had said, \u201cAssam government has not decided on the whole UCC, we are focusing on the Muslim registration bill which we made compulsory, we have said that the registration of the marriage and divorce will be done by sub-registrar rather than \u2018Qazi\u2019. Our next step is banning polygamy which will be coming anytime we are just waiting for any judicial comment on Uttarakhand UCC<\/a>. We are looking closely”.<\/p>\n


He added, \u201cWe are not looking to bring a comprehensive UCC because our line of action is different. We are working against child marriage<\/a>. We are working against the exploitation of women. Our stand is completely different.\u201d Sarma said.On February 19 last year, Assam CM Sarma had said, “The Assam cabinet has discussed both the anti-polygamy and UCC bills. We were working on the anti-polygamy bill<\/a> while Uttarakhand passed the UCC. An expert committee is working on aligning the two aspects so we can bring more robust legislation.”The Assam government<\/a> had formed an expert committee to study the legislative competence<\/a> of the Assembly to enact a law banning polygamy, and the report stated that the state legislature is competent to enforce such a ban.<\/p>\n

The Assam government had invited public comments on proposed law banning polygamy. The government received \u201cstrong public support\u201d for its suggestion to ban polygamy in the state, Sarma said earlier, adding that his government will now set in motion the legislative process to enact a law that will make polygamy illegal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have received a total of 149 suggestions in response to our public notice. Out of these, 146 suggestions are in favour of the bill, indicating strong public support,\u201d Sarma had said in a tweet on social media<\/a> platform X. \u201cHowever, three organisations have expressed their opposition to the bill. We will now proceed to the next stage of the process, which is to complete the final drafting of the bill in the next 45 days.\u201d
