He said he did not want Russia to leave Syria \u201cin the way that some wish.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want Russia to exit Syria in a way that undermines its relationship with our country,\u201d Mr. al-Shara said, noting that Syria depended on Russia for all its weapons and to manage many of its power plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. al-Shara\u2019s Islamist rebel group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has been branded a terrorist organization by both Russia and the United States. But leaders from Moscow and the West have reached out to him, amid a broader scramble for geopolitical influence in postwar Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Russia has two main military bases in the country: the Tartus naval base on the Mediterranean Sea, which dates to the Soviet era, and the Khmeimim air base near Latakia, which Russian forces set up in 2015 to help Moscow back Mr. al-Assad in the civil war. Russian forces also established smaller outposts across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Having to close the bases would be a serious blow to Russia\u2019s ambitions of maintaining a military foothold in the Middle East and exerting influence in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, who has extended asylum to Mr. al-Assad in Moscow, said during his annual call-in show last month that Russia must consider what to do about its bases in Syria, now that the country is under new leadership.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe must think about this, because we must decide for ourselves how our relations will develop with those political forces that currently control and will control the situation in this country,\u201d Mr. Putin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Russia\u2019s foreign minister, Sergey V.
