On Monday at 8:40 PM, Air India<\/a> flight AI 2957, carrying 126 passengers from New Delhi to Mumbai, sent an emergency signal to Delhi\u2019s Air Traffic Control (ATC) indicating a possible hijacking. In accordance with security protocols, ATC immediately alerted the destination airport, security agencies, and the Indian Air Force (IAF). A central committee was convened, including representatives from the Delhi Police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Airports Authority of India (AAI), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and the IAF, as reported by Hindustan Times.According to a Delhi airport official, the alarm was raised when the aircraft\u2019s transponder transmitted a \u2018squawk 7500\u2019 code, a distress signal indicating unlawful interference. \u201cThe aircraft\u2019s transponder sent a \u2018squawk 7500\u2019 code to the Delhi ATC immediately after its take-off,\u201d the official said on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n

Authorities Respond With Caution<\/h2>\n

Despite the pilot promptly informing ATC that the signal was a false alarm, authorities followed standard protocol, treating the situation as a potential security threat. A former ATC official emphasised the necessity of this approach, stating, \u201cHow can the ATC assume that the pilot is not being pressured to tell the authorities that the flight is uneventful? What if he is at gunpoint and has been asked to say so?\u201d<\/p>\n

As part of the emergency response, Mumbai\u2019s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport declared a full emergency at 9:30 PM, ensuring that all local police forces, CISF personnel, and the National Security Guard (NSG) were on standby.<\/p>\n

Flight Lands Safely, Security Checks Conducted<\/h2>\n

The flight landed safely in Mumbai at 9:47 PM, where it was immediately directed to an isolation bay. A Mumbai airport official explained, \u201cAn aerodrome committee at Mumbai airport was formed as per protocol and a full emergency was declared at the airport, at around 9:30 PM, where all the local police and stakeholders along with NSG (National Security Guard) were deployed.\u201d

Authorities conducted a thorough inspection before permitting passengers to deboard, delaying their exit by an hour to ensure all security measures were met.<\/p>\n

Investigation Underway Into False Alert<\/h2>\n

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), along with BCAS and CISF, has launched an inquiry to determine whether the false alarm resulted from a technical malfunction or human error. A senior aviation ministry official stated, \u201cThe aim is to find out the cause of the false indication. Whether it was pilot error or the air traffic controller on duty who, maybe, misread the indication will only be clear after the investigation is concluded.\u201dAn airline official familiar with the incident clarified, \u201cThere has been no indication of any crew involvement in the incident. It could have been a technical error, all of which will be known only after the regulator\u2019s (DGCA) enquiry is concluded.\u201d<\/p>\n

Squawk codes are four-digit transponder signals used by aircraft to communicate with ATC. While most squawk codes are assigned for routine identification, certain numbers are reserved for emergencies. Squawk 7500 specifically denotes an unlawful interference or hijacking situation. Other emergency codes include squawk 7600, which indicates radio communication failure, and squawk 7700, used for general emergencies.<\/p>\n

Despite the pilot\u2019s repeated assurances that there was no hijacking, aviation security protocols<\/a> require authorities to treat every emergency signal as genuine until proven otherwise. A ministry official explained, \u201cOnce the indication is made, the stakeholders need to follow a protocol and prepare for the worst.\u201d<\/p>\n

After landing, the pilot reiterated to Mumbai authorities that the aircraft had not been hijacked and had been operating normally. This incident highlights the high level of caution taken by Indian aviation security in ensuring passenger safety and addressing potential threats.
