Arg\u00fcello G\u00f3mez, Nicaragua\u2019s agent before the U.N.\u2019s 15-judge court known as the ICJ, said the case was a throwback to when Nicaragua sued the United States before the same court. At the time, the United States was supporting a group known as the Contras, a counterrevolutionary force that sought to overthrow Nicaragua\u2019s left-wing Sandinista government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe present case is different, but it has a striking similarity,\u201d Mr. Arg\u00fcello told the court in a speech Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tuesday marks that case\u2019s official 40-year anniversary. It\u2019s also when Germany is expected to address the court in response to Nicaragua\u2019s accusation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nicaragua\u2019s president, Daniel Ortega, and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, probably hope to bolster their international image by spearheading a case against Israel and its allies, said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/26\/opinion\/daniel-ortega-nicaragua.html\" title=\"\">Mateo Jarqu\u00edn<\/a>, a Nicaraguan historian at Chapman University in California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNicaragua\u2019s ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front party has a long track record, dating back to its time in power in the 1980s, of using global bodies like the ICJ to carve out space for itself internationally \u2014 to build legitimacy and resist diplomatic isolation,\u201d Mr. Jarqu\u00edn said. \u201cIt\u2019s unclear if in this case they will be as successful as they were in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the 1984 dispute, the United States was ordered to cease and desist any support for any paramilitary forces in Nicaragua. The U.S. questioned the court\u2019s jurisdiction and Nicaragua withdrew the case a few years later after the Sandinistas lost power through an election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Jarqu\u00edn noted the irony: The U.N. has accused Mr. Ortega and his wife of crimes against humanity in the six years since hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across the country to demand their ouster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The couple are accused of unleashing harsh police firepower against civilians during those protests, leaving hundreds of people dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the ensuing years, they have manipulated the judiciary and legislative branches of government to consolidate their own power, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/02\/world\/americas\/nicaragua-human-rights-nazi-germany-un.html\" title=\"\">investigators concluded<\/a>.
