Chhotan Singh<\/a> was in Saudi Arabia\u2019s Dammam Jubail, where he works, when he got a call on Wednesday night from his wife in Bihar\u2019s Gopalganj district, informing him about the death of his mother in the Mahakumbh stampede<\/a>. \u201cI lost the most precious thing in my life and was desperate to reach my village. I wanted to attend my mother\u2019s last rites at any cost,\u201d Singh said. He took a flight to Delhi early Thursday morning and another from there to Patna. \u201cNow, I am on my way to my village. This is my story of the last twelve hours,\u201d Singh told ET over the phone.<\/p>\n

His mother, 72-year-old Shivkali Devi, had reached Prayagraj<\/a> along with her daughter Sangeeta Devi and grandson Sujeet on Monday. Sangeeta was also injured in the incident. \u201cShe (his sister) is present in the ambulance carrying the body of my mother,\u201d Singh said. His brother, who works in the IT sector in Pune, was also on the way to the village by train.<\/p>\n

Girish Dubey, who works at a company in Noida, has a similar story to share. He got a phone call around 10 am on Wednesday from the driver of an ambulance. \u201cHe gave me the shocking news about the death of my mother, Kanti Devi<\/a>, in the stampede,\u201d he said. \u201cMy nephew Mukul is with the body of my mother. The mela administration is also in touch,\u201d Dubey told ET over the phone from Prayagraj.<\/p>\n

He has two sisters; his father died in 2012. His mother was with him till a month back in Noida. \u201cI asked her not to go to Mahakumbh in view of the presence of a huge crowd there. But she was desperate to go there to take a holy dip in the Sangam,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n


The 70-year-old returned to her village in Bihar from Noida and then went alone to Prayagraj. \u201cI was in touch with her during her stay in Mahakumbh,\u201d he said.The body of 55-year-old victim Rajrani Devi<\/a> reached her village Soshana in Bihar\u2019s Aurangabad on Thursday. y. \u201cMy younger brother, Ramsewak, was accompanying my mother Rajrani during her Kumbh visit. Her death occurred due to being crushed. My brother was also injured,\u201d Jitendra Yadav, her eldest son, said over the phone. He said his father died in 2004. The body of another victim from the same district, a young girl named Sonam, reached her village, Haspura, on Thursday. She had accompanied her mother, Rajni Kunwar, to Prayagraj. \u201cAfter her father\u2019s death about two years ago, she was her mother\u2019s sole support,\u201d her maternal uncle Shatrughna Sharma said on phone.<\/div>\n
