US President Donald\u00a0Trump\u00a0told reporters on Monday that\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0is in\u00a0talks\u00a0to\u00a0acquire\u00a0TikTok\u00a0and that he would like to see a bidding war over the app.<\/p>\n

Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0declined to comment.\u00a0TikTok<\/a>\u00a0and ByteDance<\/a> did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for a comment outside regular business hours.<\/p>\n

TikTok, which has about 170 million American users, was briefly taken offline just before a law requiring its Chinese owner ByteDance to either sell it on national security grounds or face a ban took effect on January 19.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>, after taking office on January 20, signed an executive order seeking to delay by 75 days the enforcement of the law.<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0said last week that he was in\u00a0talks\u00a0with multiple people over buying\u00a0TikTok\u00a0and would likely have a decision on the popular app’s future in 30 days.<\/p>\n

The US president has previously said that he was open to billionaire Elon Musk<\/a> buying the social media app if the Tesla CEO wanted to do so. Musk, however, has not publicly commented on\u00a0Trump’s offer.<\/p>\n

More recently, AI startup Perplexity AI on Sunday made a proposal to merge with\u00a0TikTok, with the US government getting up to half of the new company in future, a source told Reuters on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The reported\u00a0talks\u00a0mark the second time that\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0has been in the frame to\u00a0acquire\u00a0TikTok.<\/p>\n

During his first term,\u00a0Trump\u00a0ordered\u00a0TikTok\u00a0to separate its US version from ByteDance citing national security concerns.<\/p>\n

Microsoft\u00a0emerged as a top bidder in 2020, but the\u00a0talks\u00a0soon collapsed, and\u00a0Trump’s divestment push ended a few months later when he left office.<\/p>\n

Microsoft\u00a0CEO Satya Nadella called that deal the “strangest thing I’ve ever worked on.”<\/p>\n

The US government had a “particular set of requirements and then it just disappeared,” he said in 2021.<\/p>\n
