Manbij has been a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/08\/world\/middleeast\/syria-turkey-kurds.html\" title=\"\">focal point of violence<\/a> between armed groups, one backed by the United States and the other by Turkey. The blast on Monday was one of the deadliest such attacks since <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/syria-civil-war-rebels.html\" title=\"\">the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Turkish-backed fighters wrested control of the city in December from Kurdish-led forces, who are supported by the United States, and there has since been a spate of car bombings, according to the White Helmets, the Syrian civil defense force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agricultural workers were being transported in the back of a truck when a car bomb exploded alongside them on the outskirts of the city, which lies about 55 miles northeast of Aleppo, the White Helmets said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Most of the dead were women. At least 15 other people were wounded, and the death toll was expected to rise, the force said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Footage from the aftermath showed the charred and mangled remnants of a vehicle, and the truck carrying the workers was pierced with shrapnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The continued violence underscored the challenges faced by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/30\/world\/europe\/syria-president-ahmed-al-shara.html\" title=\"\">Syria\u2019s new interim president<\/a>, Ahmed al-Shara, who is attempting to navigate a critical juncture in the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. al-Shara, who was appointed last week, has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/30\/world\/asia\/ahmed-al-shara-syria-president.html\" title=\"\">pledged to create an inclusive transitional government<\/a>.
