The police said that at least 11 people were killed \u2014 with the suspect believed to be among the dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With Sweden in mourning, the authorities had yet to establish a motive or identify who was involved. Here\u2019s a look at what we know.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3fee16dc\">What happened?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gunfire erupted at about 12:30 p.m. at the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/gymnasieskolor.orebro.se\/komvux\/varautbildningar.4.de48b8615ad754fdddad.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Risbergska educational center<\/a>, which offers classes to about 2,000 adults. Cellphone footage broadcast <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.svt.se\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on local television<\/a> showed students cowering under desks and chairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The authorities responded with a \u201cmajor operation,\u201d sending police cars and armed officers swarming onto the campus. Nearby schools were briefly put on lockdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Early reports said that at least five people had been shot. The country was long known for low crime rates and high living standards, but <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/04\/world\/europe\/sweden-school-shooting.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\">statistics show<\/a> that it has been grappling with one of the highest per capita rates of gun violence in the European Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson ordered flags flown at half-staff in response to what he called a \u201chorrific act of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Families of the dead and wounded were gathering outside the educational center in Orebro, which remained shuttered and cordoned off with blue and white police tape on Wednesday.
