election driven by concerns over rising violence and a worsening security situation in the Latin American nation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_EF3122BE-7714-2A2F-37AD-360CDD55D730@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 10 million people have voted in the presidential election, and data from the National Electoral Council of Ecuador (CNE) shows Noboa obtained 52.3% of the votes (4,829,130).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4FE1FF2C-AED3-85A0-F356-360D477E6385@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His main political rival, leftist candidate and first round front-runner Luisa Gonz\u00e1lez, obtained 47.7% of votes (4,404,014), the CNE said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" of another presidential candidate, Fernando Villavicencio, who was slain days before the August 20 first-round poll.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_218A41C2-2782-537B-B4D0-350E29F45360@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" The country gave us this mission, and today, we say to Ecuador and the entire world, \u2018task accomplished;\u2019 today democracy won, today Ecuador won.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_BFF21338-32EF-9C15-AC3B-350E2A228B50@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before Ecuador, a nation of nearly 17 million, was transformed into one of the most dangerous countries in the region, it was known as a relatively peaceful place that was nestled between two of the world\u2019s largest narcotics producers, Peru and Colombia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E4DC7FD9-D504-7D9F-92C0-350E2A23B841@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Its deep ports, dollarized economy, and corruption have since made it a key transit point for drugs making its way to consumers in the US and Europe. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/20\/americas\/ecuador-election-result-intl-latam\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The mounting violence<\/a>, paired with a lack of economic prospects, have also compelled many Ecuadorians to leave the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_59AE0D83-AFDE-0ED7-9CCA-354CE1AC8898@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are not sure [what] will put an end to this because we cannot live with that fear\u201d of crime, small business owner C\u00e9sar Ortiz told CNN en Espa\u00f1ol in Quito ahead of the poll.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_26A54540-C54C-71BF-1522-354CE1ACFC6C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ortiz <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnespanol.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/10\/ciudadanos-ecuador-nuevo-presidente-orix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he hopes the new president will focus not just on security but on the economy because \u201cthere are so many people who are unemployed, that is why crime [is] abound.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_88AF33D5-7B43-15DC-7257-350E2A29651D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whoever wins on Sunday may gain a cursed chalice, say analysts covering the region. \u201cGoverning Ecuador right now is hell \u2013 this presidency is designed to eliminate you from political life,\u201d Freeman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_B649FF55-BAA6-C9A0-B375-350E2A2A17A9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new president will have relatively little time to work on a solution to the country\u2019s woes.
