It was on its way from Cebu Province to Cotabato City, the capital of a Muslim autonomous region on Mindanao.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The incident occurred during a \u201croutine mission in support of U.S.-Philippine security cooperation activities,\u201d U.S. Indo-Pacific Command <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pacom.mil\/Media\/News\/News-Article-View\/Article\/4058725\/statement-on-aircraft-incident-in-maguindanao-del-sur\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe aircraft was providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support at the request of our Philippine allies,\u201d the statement said. The names of those killed were being withheld until family members could be notified. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Philippines is the oldest treaty ally of the United States in Asia. U.S. troops have been deployed for years at a military camp in Mindanao to help train Philippine soldiers fighting Muslim separatist militants.
