But the ring of light around its centre has never been detected before.<\/p>\n<p>The ring is made up of light from a background galaxy 4.42 billion light-years away and what can be seen from Earth is distorted by gravity.<\/p>\n<p>The distant galaxy itself has not been observed before and has not yet been named.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">The ring of light surrounding the NGC 6505 galaxy. Pic: PA<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Such rings can help scientists test Albert Einstein&#8217;s general theory of relativity, according to Professor Thomas Collett, from the University of Portsmouth&#8217;s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This lens is particularly special because it&#8217;s in our cosmic backyard: a &#8216;mere&#8217; 500 million light-years away,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In fact, it&#8217;s so close that astronomers first observed the [NGC 6505] galaxy in the 1880s, but only with the resolving power of Euclid can we now reveal that it&#8217;s a gravitational lens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nearby lenses are exciting because they allow us to test the validity of general relativity on astronomical scales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Einstein&#8217;s theory of general relativity?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Einstein&#8217;s theory of general relativity predicts light will bend around objects in space, so they focus the light like a giant lens &#8211; and the effect would be bigger for massive galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>It allows astronomers to see light from distant galaxies that would otherwise remain hidden.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more from Sky News:<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/southport-stabbings-parents-of-bebe-king-and-elsie-dot-stancombe-pay-tribute-to-daughters-13306515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southport killer&#8217;s sentence &#8216;will not bring our daughter back<\/a>&#8216;<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/kanye-west-leaves-x-after-antisemitic-rampage-13306537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kanye West leaves X after &#8216;antisemitic rampage&#8217;<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/super-bowl-2025-donald-trump-makes-history-as-taylor-swift-booed-13306451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump makes history at Super Bowl<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>     <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/download-app\" target=\"blank\" data-tracking-label=\"ui-app-promo-download-link\" class=\"ui-app-promo sdc-article-widget\" data-type=\"\" data-component-name=\"ui-app-promo\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;This one is particularly special&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conor O&#8217;Riordan of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany and lead author of the first scientific paper analysing the ring, said: &#8220;An Einstein ring is an example of strong gravitational lensing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All strong lenses are special, because they&#8217;re so rare, and they&#8217;re incredibly useful scientifically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This one is particularly special, because it&#8217;s so close to Earth and the alignment makes it very beautiful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Euclid mission was launched in July 2023 and aims to create a 3D map of the universe by observing two billion galaxies.
