Elon Musk<\/a>, Chief Executive Officer at American electric car maker Tesla<\/a>, Wednesday posted on micro-blogging site X that he is looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> in India<\/a>. <\/p>\n

“Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister @NarendraModi in India!” Mr Musk posted on the microblogging platform, which is also owned by him. Musk, however, did not share any l details regarding the timing of his visit. Messages to Minister for Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal seeking information on Musk\u2019s visit did not elicit any response. <\/p>\n

Musk comment comes amid media reports of Tesla looking at announcing investments in the country, which recently unveiled a policy extending concessional tariffs on fully imported electric cars manufactured by foreign carmakers who commit investments to start a local factory. <\/p>\n

Under the new EV policy announced March 15, the government will allow the import of completely built-up (CBU<\/a>) electric cars that have a minimum cost, insurance and freight value of $35,000 (Rs29.2 lakh) at 15% import duty for a period of five years in exchange for a minimum investment of $500 million to start local manufacturing. India levies import duty of up to 100% on completely built-up cars. <\/p>\n

While Vietnamese EV maker VinFast<\/a> has indicated it is likely to sign up for the policy, no announcements have come from Tesla so far. <\/p>\n

\u201cWith a long-term growth commitment in India, we have pledged an expenditure of $500 million, which includes the electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu<\/a>,\u201d VinFast India<\/a> CEO Pham Sanh Chau had said in a statement on March 18. \u201cThis forward-looking policy will help us introduce a wide variety of smart, green, premium-quality SUVs at inclusive prices, along with outstanding after sales policies.\u201dIn June last year, following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk had said, \u201cI am confident that Tesla will be in India… as soon as humanly possible,\u201d marking a shift from his stance about a year earlier.Tesla currently has two vehicle manufacturing facilities outside the US \u2014 near Berlin (Germany) and in Shanghai (China).<\/div>\n
