{"id":238280,"date":"2025-02-13T18:55:24","date_gmt":"2025-02-13T18:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/13\/why-case-of-jailed-briton-jimmy-lai-is-major-sticking-point-for-keir-starmers-relations-with-china\/"},"modified":"2025-02-13T18:55:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T18:55:24","slug":"why-case-of-jailed-briton-jimmy-lai-is-major-sticking-point-for-keir-starmers-relations-with-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/13\/why-case-of-jailed-briton-jimmy-lai-is-major-sticking-point-for-keir-starmers-relations-with-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Why case of jailed Briton Jimmy Lai is major sticking point for Keir Starmer&#8217;s relations with China"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/11\/768x432\/62590aefed5687cc24f2eb56ae280f6bfd723d71f2f8fb36500f8110b7c81edf_6758015.jpg?20241125220909&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Why case of jailed Briton Jimmy Lai is major sticking point for Keir Starmer&#8217;s relations with China\" title=\"Why case of jailed Briton Jimmy Lai is major sticking point for Keir Starmer&#8217;s relations with China\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"ui-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>The UK government is facing increasing pressure to call on China to release jailed pro-democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai as it seeks closer trading ties with Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Media tycoon Mr Lai is currently on trial in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/hong-kong-6237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hong Kong<\/strong><\/a> facing charges under the city&#8217;s national security law, imposed by Beijing in 2020 in response to mass pro-democracy protests.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lai&#8217;s imprisonment and trial have become a sticking point for the British government in their dealings with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/china-5869\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>China<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese foreign secretary Wang Yi met Mr Lammy, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/sir-keir-starmer-8622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sir Keir Starmer<\/strong><\/a> briefly, in London on Thursday, and pressure was on the UK foreign secretary to raise Mr Lai&#8217;s situation and call for his release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is Jimmy Lai a British issue?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 77-year-old has lived in Hong Kong since he was 12 years old, after stowing away on a fishing boat from China and working as a child labourer in a garment factory.<\/p>\n<p>He built up fashion empire Giordano and after becoming a democracy advocate following the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, he set up a magazine in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong from the UK to China, he started Chinese-language newspaper Apple Daily in an attempt to maintain freedom of speech.<\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, in 1994, he became a full British citizen.<\/p>\n<p>He has never held a Chinese or Hong Kong passport but because he was born in mainland China, Hong Kong authorities deem him to be a Chinese citizen.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lai has homes all over the world, including in London, Paris, Taipei and Kyoto. to lead international support of Hong Kong, but denied requesting the UK government engaged in hostile activities against China and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has the British government done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Boris Johnson <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Mr Lai was charged under the national security law in 2020, then prime minister Boris Johnson said the UK was &#8220;deeply concerned&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This prompted the Chinese embassy in London to express &#8220;grave concern&#8221; and vowed to keep raising the case with Beijing as a priority.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr Sunak dodged questions about whether he had personally raised his case with the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starmer government<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a change of government, Mr Lai&#8217;s family and supporters hoped there would be a more concerted effort.<\/p>\n<p>Three months after winning the general election, Sir Keir said securing the release of Mr Lai was a &#8220;priority&#8221; Pic: AP<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ahead of his first trip to China as foreign secretary in October, Mr Lammy was urged by MPs sanctioned by Beijing to raise the case of political prisoners in Hong Kong, including Mr Lai.<\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Office said he pressed Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on Mr Lai&#8217;s detention, and Mr Lammy said he &#8220;was able to have dialogue with the Chinese on areas where we disagree, areas like Hong Kong&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>     <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/download-app\" target=\"blank\" data-tracking-label=\"ui-app-promo-download-link\" class=\"ui-app-promo sdc-article-widget\" data-type=\"\" data-component-name=\"ui-app-promo\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Lammy then <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/chancellor-rachel-reeves-accused-of-refusing-to-face-up-to-her-own-failures-amid-market-turmoil-13288661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined Chancellor Rachel Reeves on a trip<\/a><\/strong> to revive economic ties after &#8220;years of tension&#8221;. She said she raised Mr Lai&#8217;s imprisonment with every minister she met in China.<\/p>\n<p>During the latest meeting of Mr Lammy and Mr Yi, Number 10 said Sir Keir also met him briefly and told him he wants &#8220;consistent and respectful relations&#8221; and to deepen trade relations with China.<\/p>\n<p>It did not say if he brought up Mr Lai, but the foreign secretary said ahead of the meeting: &#8220;We will also discuss issues where the UK and China do not always see eye to eye.
