The judges acknowledged the plea and assured that it would be listed for hearing within the next two to three days.

What Led to the FIRs?

Allahbadia is facing serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, including Section 79, which penalises any act that insults a woman’s modesty through words, gestures, sounds, or objects. Additional charges include intrusion of a woman’s privacy. His comments about “parents having sex” during the web show triggered massive outrage, leading to multiple complaints across the country.

Authorities are also investigating other influencers who appeared in the same episode, including social media personalities Apoorva Mukhija, Ashish Chanchlani, and Jaspreet Singh. The Assam Police are working closely with Maharashtra’s Cyber Department to assess the content and its legal implications.

Police Struggle to Reach Allahbadia

Despite repeated summons, Allahbadia has yet to appear before the police. He was initially asked to report at the Khar police station on Thursday, then again on Friday. However, he did not turn up. On Friday, teams from both the Mumbai and Assam Police visited his residence in Versova, only to find it locked.

Allahbadia requested that his statement be recorded at his home, a request that was denied by the authorities. The Mumbai Police have now set a final deadline, ordering him to appear for questioning on Saturday.

Who Is Abhinav Chandrachud?

The case has also drawn attention to Allahbadia’s lawyer, Abhinav Chandrachud. He is a practising advocate at the Bombay High Court and the son of former Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud. He has an impressive academic background, holding a Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD) and a Master of the Science of Law (JSM) from Stanford Law School. He also completed his LLM at Harvard Law School as a Dana Scholar.Chandrachud previously worked as an associate attorney at the international law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is also a respected author, having written books such as Republic of Rhetoric: Free Speech and the Constitution of India (2017) and Supreme Whispers: Conversations with Judges of the Supreme Court of India 1980-1989 (2018).

In his farewell speech last year, former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud shared a personal anecdote about his sons, Abhinav and Chintan, both of whom are lawyers. “I once asked them to argue cases in the Supreme Court so I could see them more frequently. They refused, saying professional integrity was more important,” he had said.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case in the coming days. While Allahbadia seeks legal relief, authorities continue to push for his questioning. The controversy has reignited discussions on free speech, accountability, and the responsibility of digital content creators.

With growing scrutiny of online speech, this case could set a precedent for how social media influencers are held accountable for their words. The legal battle is far from over, and all eyes are now on the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Source link

YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, widely known as ‘BeerBiceps’, is at the centre of a growing legal storm.
