Overall, Hamas agreed to release 33 of the nearly 100 people who were captured on Oct. 7, 2023. In exchange, Israel agreed to free more than 1,000 Palestinians held in its jails and partially withdraw from Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s a closer look at the three civilian male hostages, including an Israeli American, who were released on Saturday:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6c0ae185\">Sagui Dekel-Chen<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dekel-Chen, an Israeli American who had played for Israel\u2019s national basketball team, was 35 when he was taken from Nir Oz, a kibbutz in southern Israel close to the Gaza border where militants abducted more than 70 people in the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He is a father of three; his youngest child was born during his captivity. Mr. Dekel-Chen worked as national coordinator for the British branch of the Jewish National Fund and with his wife, converted buses for new uses, such as for mobile classrooms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dekel-Chen\u2019s family was active in advocating a cease-fire deal. His father, Jonathan Dekel-Chen, a history professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, wrote <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/18\/opinion\/holocaust-israel-palestinians-hamas.html\" title=\"\">an opinion piece for The New York Times<\/a> critical of the Israeli government for not bringing home the hostages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In August, the professor told The Times that he and other members of the Nir Oz kibbutz would not <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/23\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-oct-7-memorial.html\" title=\"\">participate in an official government ceremony<\/a> then being planned to commemorate the Oct. 7 attack. He said they were \u201cappalled by the idea of this government creating a ceremony that would distract from their culpability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dekel-Chen\u2019s mother, Neomit Dekel-Chen, and some neighbors were also captured in the Oct. 7 attack. She escaped from an electric cart that was heading toward Gaza when an Israeli military helicopter shot at the militants, according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.timesofisrael.com\/i-decided-to-play-dead-my-son-is-still-missing\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an account she gave<\/a> to Israeli news media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Horn was 45 when he was abducted from Nir Oz along with one of his two brothers, Eitan, who was visiting for the weekend. Iair Horn worked in construction and his brother worked as a teacher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Iair Horn was born in Israel and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-hamas-war\/article-784749\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">raised in Argentina<\/a>. He returned to Israel as an adult along with his parents and siblings, according to their mother, Ruth Strom. They are part of a large <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/families-of-four-pairs-of-sibling-hostages-held-in-gaza-mark-400-days-of-captivity\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Argentine community<\/a> on the kibbutz, including other families awaiting the return of hostages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eitan Horn has not been slated for release in the first phase of the cease-fire deal, and Ms. Strom has said she was anxious that Iair would <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/a-mothers-anguish-one-son-to-be-freed-from-gaza-another-left-behind\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">have to leave his brother behind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Their father, Itzik Horn, said in December 2023, after the Israeli military mistakenly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/29\/world\/middleeast\/hostage-killings-israel-military.html\" title=\"\">shot and killed three hostages<\/a> who had fled their captors in Gaza, that Israel must reach a deal even if it means freeing prisoners designated as terrorists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe most important thing isn\u2019t to defeat Hamas,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/12\/16\/world\/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news\/israel-hostage-killings-families-hamas?smid=url-share\" title=\"\">he said in an interview<\/a>. \u201cThe only victory here is to bring back all the hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Troufanov, a Russian Israeli dual citizen who was 27 when he was captured, was visiting family in Nir Oz on Oct. 7. His father was killed, and his mother, grandmother and girlfriend were taken hostage but <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/02\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostages-tel-aviv-protest.html\" title=\"\">released during an earlier cease-fire<\/a>, in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Troufanov, who lived with his girlfriend in a Tel Aviv suburb and worked at a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/forward-newsletters\/looking-forward\/675613\/looking-forward-sasha-troufanov-josh-katz-coffee-break-israeli-hostages\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">company owned by Amazon<\/a>, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/13\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-israeli-hostage-video-troufanov.html\" title=\"\">seen in a video<\/a> released by Palestinian Islamic Jihad \u2014 the second most powerful militant group in Gaza after Hamas \u2014 in November of last year. He appeared weary, with an untrimmed beard and bags under his eyes, and spoke of a lack of food and water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In October, Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/salam.musafir.3\/videos\/576759968125158\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told Russia Today<\/a> that he had spoken to Islamic Jihad about Mr. Troufanov, and that Hamas would give priority to him in any exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners \u201cin honor\u201d of President Vladimir V.
