At least 18 of them suffered injuries, some of them critical but not life threatening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred amid strong winds and drifting snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was the latest in a spate of incidents that have rattled travelers globally, including a crash in South Korea in December that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/12\/31\/world\/asia\/jeju-plane-crash-maps-photos.html\" title=\"\">killed 179 people<\/a> and a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/30\/us\/plane-crash-dc-helicopter-reagan-airport.html\" title=\"\">fatal midair collision<\/a> near Washington that left 67 people dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is what to know about the crash in Toronto.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6f0669bb\">The plane\u2019s roof became its floor.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Pete Koukov, a professional skier from Colorado who was on Flight 4819, said that nothing seemed amiss during the plane\u2019s final descent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe second that the wheels hit the ground, then everything happened,\u201d Mr. Koukov, 28, said in an interview on Monday night. \u201cThe next thing I know, we\u2019re sideways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The plane skidded on its right side, said Mr. Koukov, who was sitting at a window seat on the other side of the plane and saw flames as the plane hit the ground. It eventually ended belly side up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI unbuckled pretty fast and kind of lowered myself to the floor, which was the ceiling,\u201d Mr. Koukov said. \u201cPeople were panicking.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-617807eb\">There was drifting snow.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There were strong winds coming from the west at about 29 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 38 miles per hour, around 2:15 p.m., the time of the crash, according <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/canada_e.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">to the authorities<\/a>. There was also drifting snow in Toronto, which was struck by two snowstorms in the past few days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The weather advisories for Toronto Pearson International Airport at the time of the crash \u201cindicated a gusting crosswind and blowing snow,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/delta-4819-toronto-accident\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to Flightradar24<\/a>, an aviation tracking website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The cause of the crash will be investigated by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, which will be assisted by a team of American investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2c83b11e\">There were 76 passengers onboard.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The flight had a crew of four, according to Delta, and the rest were passengers. Of those, 22 were Canadians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some of the injured were taken to hospitals but most passengers were taken to a Sheraton Gateway Hotel, near the airport\u2019s terminals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They left around 7 p.m. local time, picked up by taxis and family members, a hotel staff member said, declining to provide more details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Operations at the airport resumed at 5 p.m. local time although two of the five runways remain closed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-33161983\">The plane was a Bombardier jet.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The model CRJ900 aircraft was operated by Endeavor Air, a Delta subsidiary that typically operates smaller planes for the airline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was about 16 years old, according to F.A.A. records. With regular maintenance, such passenger jets are often operated for two to three decades, or more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">More than 380 CRJ900s are used by airlines around the world, according to Cirium, an aviation data company.
