(courtesy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/francisfordcoppola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">francisfordcoppola<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola will return to the Cannes Film Festival with his long-awaited epic <em>Megalopolis<\/em>, organisers said on Thursday, announcing a line-up that includes some huge names of world cinema.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 77th edition of the festival on the French Cote d&#8217;Azur, considered the most prestigious in the film industry, runs from May 14 to 25.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s competition for the top prize, the Palme d&#8217;Or, includes another team-up between Emma Stone and Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos &#8212; <em>Kinds of Kindness<\/em> &#8212; just weeks after Stone&#8217;s Oscar win for their Frankenstein-style satire <em>Poor Things<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Apprentice<\/em>, a biopic about the early years of Donald Trump by Iran-born director Ali Abbasi, is expected to draw a lot of attention.\u00a0And Canadian horror maestro David Cronenberg returns with what is billed as his most personal film yet, <em>The Shrouds<\/em>, with Vincent Cassel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But all eyes are likely to be on Coppola&#8217;s <em>Megalopolis<\/em>, marking the return of <em>The Godfather<\/em> director to the Cannes Croisette at the age of 85.\u00a0He has twice won the Palme d&#8217;Or &#8212; for <em>The Conversation<\/em> (1974) and, controversially, for <em>Apocalypse Now <\/em>(1979), which was not even finished when it premiered at the festival.<\/p>\n<p>He has self-funded<em> Megalopolis,<\/em> said to be a Roman political drama transplanted to modern-day New York, starring Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker and a host of other stars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8216;Emmanuelle&#8217; returns &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s jury is led by <em>Barbie <\/em>director Greta Gerwig, who &#8220;embodies perfectly the soul of the festival&#8221;, said Cannes president Iris Knobloch.<\/p>\n<p>Among the more intriguing entries Gerwig will judge is <em>Emilia Perez<\/em>, a musical comedy about a Mexican cartel boss undergoing a sex-change operation, with popstar-actor Selena Gomez in a supporting role &#8212; the latest unlikely creation from Palme-winning French director Jacques Audiard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was already known that <em>Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga<\/em>, the latest instalment of the post-apocalyptic franchise, will get its world premiere at the festival, playing out of competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So will Kevin Costner&#8217;s new opus, <em>Horizon, An American Saga<\/em>, in which the veteran star plays alongside Sienna Miller in the first of a planned series about the American West. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, George Lucas &#8212; the man behind <em>Star Wars<\/em> and<em> Indiana Jones<\/em> &#8212; will receive an honorary Palme d&#8217;Or at the closing ceremony.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A film about women&#8217;s rights in China will also play out of competition. <em>She Has No Name <\/em>stars two of the country&#8217;s biggest stars, Lei Jiayin and\u00a0Zhang Ziyi.<\/p>\n<p>Two highly topical films will have special screenings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>La Belle de Gaza<\/em> follows transsexual Palestinians moving to Israel and <em>The Invasion<\/em> by Sergei Loznitsa centres on the war in his native Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Success at Cannes can give a major boost to arthouse films such as last year&#8217;s winner, <em>Anatomy of a Fall<\/em>, which went on to win an avalanche of awards, including an Oscar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>(This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/entertainment\/cannes-2024-official-selection-includes-francis-ford-coppola-kevin-costner-see-lineup-5419593#publisher=newsstand\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image Instagrammed by Francis Ford Coppola.
