There had been no repeat of the \u201casthmatic respiratory crisis\u201d that the pope experienced on Saturday, it said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The pope was \u201calert and well oriented,\u201d and tests showed that his anemia had improved thanks to blood transfusions, the Vatican said, adding that he was still receiving high flows of supplemental oxygen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Francis, who as a young man had part of a lung removed, has suffered a series of health conditions in recent years, but this is his longest hospitalization for a lung infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sergio Alfieri, a surgeon who is on the pope\u2019s medical team, said on Friday that the pope had told him that he was aware of his own fragility and that \u201cboth doors are open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cardinal Timothy Dolan, in his homily on Sunday at St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral in New York, said that Francis was \u201cin very, very fragile health and probably close to death,\u201d as he urged the faithful to pray for the ailing pope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/23\/world\/asia\/mass-pope-francis-prayers-photos.html\" title=\"\">around the world have gathered to pray for Francis<\/a>, who is the spiritual leader of almost 1.4 billion Roman Catholics.
