Putin of Russia is not scheduled to attend any events on Monday for the anniversary of the full-scale invasion that he ordered, which has metastasized into Europe\u2019s biggest military conflict since World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Russian state TV opened Monday morning news bulletins with routine reports from the front lines in Ukraine, making no reference to the symbolism of the date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And local officials who typically toe the Kremlin\u2019s line on glorifying the invasion \u2014 casting Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine as heroes and the war as a moral imperative \u2014 were uncharacteristically quiet on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nor is Russia mourning its casualties \u2014 which U.S. intelligence <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/10\/us\/politics\/russia-casualties-ukraine-war.html\" title=\"\">estimates to be in the hundreds of thousands<\/a> including the wounded \u2014 in any public way on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">However, independent Russian journalists in exile published a joint <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/zona.media\/news\/2025\/02\/24\/160k\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> saying that Russia had lost over 165,000 soldiers in three years of fighting, based on publicly available data from court records. Those figures could not be independently confirmed, and Russia\u2019s defense ministry refuses to disclose casualty figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A top Russian diplomat made no mention of the anniversary on Monday but praised the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/19\/us\/politics\/trump-ukraine-russia-republicans.html\" title=\"\">draw closer to Mr. Putin<\/a> and bring an end to the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cA cease-fire without a long-term settlement is a path to renewed fighting and conflict at a later date with even graver consequences including for Russian-American ties,\u201d Sergei A.
