Putin on Monday, according to Chinese state media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The warm words attributed to Xi Jinping were clearly intended to dampen speculation that the Trump administration might succeed in driving a wedge between Beijing and Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHistory and reality show us that China and Russia are good neighbors who won\u2019t move away, and true friends who have been through thick and thin together, support each other and develop together,\u201d Mr. Xi was quoted as saying by Chinese state media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Xi said relations between China and Russia were not \u201caffected by any third party,\u201d in what appeared to be an oblique reference to the United States. And he said the two countries\u2019 foreign policies were for the \u201clong term.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Kremlin issued a similarly cordial statement after the call, describing Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin\u2019s conversation as \u201cwarm and friendly.\u201d In a rebuff of the idea that President Trump could divide the two countries, the Kremlin added: \u201cThe leaders emphasized that the Russian-Chinese foreign policy link is the most important stabilizing factor in world affairs,\u201d and said the relationship was \u201cnot subject to external influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The call was the second between Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin in just over a month, coming less than two weeks after Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/18\/us\/politics\/trump-russia-putin.html\" title=\"\">upended U.S. strategy<\/a> toward Russia by holding a phone call with Mr. Putin and appearing to side with him over the war in Ukraine. Mr. Trump blamed Ukraine for instigating Russia\u2019s invasion, called President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine a \u201cdictator\u201d and excluded Kyiv from peace negotiations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s decision to side so favorably with Mr. Putin on the war has fueled speculation that Washington was aiming to split Russia and China, a country that some senior Trump officials consider a far more serious threat to U.S. interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Trump\u2019s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, told a panel earlier this month in Munich that the Trump administration was hoping to \u201cforce\u201d Mr. Putin to fray his ties with North Korea, Iran and China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Analysts, however, have expressed skepticism that China and Russia can be driven apart in what is being called a \u201creverse Nixon,\u201d a reference to President Nixon\u2019s rapprochement with Beijing in 1972 that was aimed at exploiting the worsening relations between China and the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Unlike 53 years ago, ties between China and Russia today are at a high. Shortly before the invasion of Ukraine, Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin heralded a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/07\/world\/asia\/putin-ukraine-china-xi.html\" title=\"\">\u201cno limits\u201d<\/a> partnership. Since then, China has sustained Russia\u2019s war machine with oil purchases and exports of dual use technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin also share an ideological opposition to the West. They blame the United States for holding back their global ambitions, and promote a reshaping of the global order to weaken Washington\u2019s dominance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s strategic and geopolitical alignment for this relationship,\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sais.jhu.edu\/kissinger\/people\/radchenko\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sergey Radchenko<\/a>, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies who specializes in Chinese-Russian relations. \u201cThey don\u2019t see eye to eye on everything, but I think they both realize they need each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Radchenko said Beijing was probably feeling uncomfortable with Mr. Trump\u2019s bid to court Mr. Putin, but that it was unlikely that Mr. Putin would see his interests better served by aligning more closely with the United States over China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe idea that Putin can be manipulated as some kind of weapon against China, I think that\u2019s na\u00efve on the part of the Trump administration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Xi is set to visit Moscow in May to attend the commemorations of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, according to Russian state media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Kremlin said in a statement that Mr. Putin had informed Mr. Xi during their call about \u201crecent Russian-American contacts.\u201d It also said China had \u201cexpressed support for the dialogue between Russia and the United States that has begun, as well as readiness to contribute to the search for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the comments published by Chinese state media, Mr. Xi said he was \u201cpleased\u201d that Russia had started negotiations with \u201cother parties\u201d to end the \u201cUkrainian crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">China has yet to describe Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine as a \u201cwar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Amy Chang Chien<!-- --> contributed research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/24\/world\/asia\/xi-putin-call-russia-china-trump.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s leader said his country and Russia were \u201ctrue friends who have been through thick and thin together\u201d after a video call with President Vladimir V.
