Recently, internet operations were affected in the government due to cable cuts. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) last year decided to recall a proposal aimed at providing faster internet connectivity to India’s northeastern states. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently stated that the state government will propose laying optical fiber cable under the Brahmaputra River up to Kolkata.“During the Advantage Assam 2.0 – Investment and Infrastructure Summit on February 25 and 26, there will be a session on I-way, which will be attended by the Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia. This proposal will be discussed in detail,” he added. He also mentioned, “Recently, we have experienced cable cuts, which caused government operations to suffer for several days.”

In 2022, the then Union Minister for Communications and Electronics & Information Technology and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that efforts are underway to extend the successful implementation of internet connectivity from the Cox’s Bazar international landing station (Bangladesh) to Agartala through BSNL. He said, “Work is ongoing to provide high-speed internet throughout the Northeast. An out-of-the-box experiment was conducted for 10 GB internet connectivity from the Cox’s Bazar international landing station to Agartala through BSNL. The experiment has been extremely successful, and we will now be further extending this.”

The BTRC has recalled a proposal aimed at providing faster internet connectivity to India’s northeastern states. The project planned to use the Akhaura border between India and Bangladesh in Tripura as a transit route from Singapore to connect the region with Southeast Asia via Bharti Airtel’s network. Currently, India’s northeastern states rely on a submarine cable connection routed through Chennai, which is about 5,500 km away, resulting in slower internet speeds. However, the BTRC decided to recall the proposal, citing concerns that the project would undermine Bangladesh’s position as a regional internet hub.

The Brahmaputra River originates from the Kailash ranges of the Himalayas. After flowing through Tibet, it enters India through Arunachal Pradesh and flows through Assam and Bangladesh before it joins the Bay of Bengal. During its course in the Assam valley from Kobo to Dhubri, the river is joined by approximately 20 important tributaries on its north bank and 13 on its south bank. The joining of these tributaries, which bring high sediment loads, activates braiding.

Source link

The Assam government is proposing to lay optical fiber cable under the Brahmaputra River up to Kolkata for faster internet connectivity.
