The incident, which occurred on 21st February at a private school, left investigators initially baffled. There was no evidence of a conventional explosive device. No shrapnel. Just chemical burns on the victim.

CCTV Footage Reveals the Truth

The breakthrough came through surveillance footage. Five students—three girls and two boys from Classes VIII and IX—were seen planting sodium metal inside the cistern of the school washroom. Their intention, according to police, was to target a female teacher they were upset with.

Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Rajnesh Singh described the case as highly unusual. “It’s indeed a very strange case,” he said. “CCTV footage helped identify the students who planted sodium inside the school washroom.”

Inspired by an Online Video

The students had reportedly watched a video online demonstrating the explosive reaction of sodium metal with water. Using a relative’s online shopping account, one of them ordered the substance. The plan was set: place the sodium in the cistern, wait for the teacher to use the washroom, and let the explosion happen when she flushed.

Unintended Victim Caught in the Blast

But the plan went terribly wrong. On the morning of 21st February, a Class IV student unknowingly triggered the explosion. The moment she flushed, the washroom shook with a blast.Teachers and staff rushed to the scene. The door was locked. The girl’s screams echoed from inside. They broke it down and found her collapsed on the floor, her body covered in burns. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Her parents, in shock, immediately filed a First Information Report (FIR). Meanwhile, the school community was shaken. Parents feared for their children’s safety, with some even threatening protests unless action was taken.

Four Students Detained, One Still at Large

After identifying the culprits, the police detained four students on 23rd February. The fifth, who had been staying with relatives, is yet to be taken into custody. All four were produced before a juvenile court and sent to a rehabilitation home. Authorities have assured that the students will undergo counselling.

A Warning on Online Chemical Sales

The incident has raised serious concerns over the accessibility of dangerous chemicals. “Such chemicals are not easily available in any store or laboratory,” said SP Singh. “Online purchasing is a major loophole that needs to be fixed.”

Parents Demand Stronger Security Measures

The attack has sparked outrage among parents, many of whom are calling for stricter security measures in schools. Education authorities, alongside school principals, have launched an internal review to identify security lapses and prevent future incidents.

As investigations continue, the school and law enforcement remain on high alert, ensuring that no such incident is repeated.

(With inputs from TOI)

Source link

What started as a plan to scare a teacher turned into a nightmare when a school washroom explosion injured a nine-year-old girl in Bilaspur.
