Israel did not immediately comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The release followed several fraught days of negotiations, after Israel refused on Saturday to deliver 620 Palestinian prisoners whom it had agreed to exchange <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/22\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostage-hamas-ceasefire.html\" title=\"\">for six Israeli hostages<\/a>. Since late January, when the cease-fire went into effect, Israel and Hamas have been regularly exchanging hostages taken to Gaza for Palestinians in Israeli prisons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After Hamas released the six Israelis on Saturday \u2014 most of them in performative events designed to show the militant group\u2019s continued control in Gaza \u2014 Israel refused to free the Palestinian prisoners, saying it would not do so until Hamas committed to releasing more hostages and forgoing \u201chumiliation ceremonies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Before returning hostages, Hamas has often paraded them through shouting throngs of the group\u2019s supporters, enraging Israeli officials. Last week, before Hamas handed over coffins said to contain the remains of four captives, the militant group staged a display with music and taunts aimed at the Israeli government. Volker T\u00fcrk, the United Nations human rights chief, called the event \u201cabhorrent and cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israeli authorities had forensic teams present at the handover to attempt an initial identification of the bodies, the Health Ministry said, after which they would be taken to Israel\u2019s Institute of Forensic Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel is expected to free the 620 Palestinian prisoners after it has confirmed the identities of the four returned bodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s a closer look at the deceased hostages Hamas said it released.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3a15bae6\">Shlomo Mansour<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Mansour was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-12-21\/ty-article\/.premium\/shlomo-the-oldest-hostage-in-gaza-represents-the-fragility-and-dignity-of-human-life\/00000193-e9f9-d17a-a193-f9f93d240000\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">85 years old<\/a> when Hamas led the attack on Israel in 2023. He was the oldest hostage taken, and his death was not confirmed until recently. This month, the Israeli authorities said that Mr. Mansour had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/hostage-shlomo-mansour-was-slain-on-oct-7-his-body-taken-captive-to-gaza-says-idf\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">been killed in the initial attack<\/a> and that his body had been taken to Gaza.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During the attack, militants stormed the home of Mr. Mansour and his wife, Mazal Mansour, in Kibbutz Kissufim, near the Gaza border. Armed men dragged them both outside where they handcuffed Mr. Mansour and beat him, his daughter told <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynet.co.il\/news\/article\/hkoisklv0\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Israeli news media<\/a>. His wife managed to escape and hid in a neighbor\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Mansour was born in Iraq and immigrated to Israel as a teen. He managed the kibbutz chicken coops and was a lover of ice cream. Almost a year ago last March, his family marked what would have been his 86th birthday with a request that the public <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/family-of-86-year-old-hostage-ask-public-to-eat-ice-cream-for-his-birthday\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">eat ice cream<\/a> on his behalf and post a picture on social media with the caption \u201cBring.Shlomo.Home.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1aa81308\">Itzhak Elgarat<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Elgarat was 68 when he was captured during the attack. Fighters took him from his safe room in Kibbutz Nir Oz and shot him in the hand, according to his brother, Danny Elgarat, who spoke to him on the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/taken-captive-itzik-elgarat-shot-in-his-hand-by-terrorists\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">morning of the attack<\/a>. Mr. Elgarat was a dual Israeli and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Eurojewcong\/photos\/today-the-danish-israeli-hostage-itzik-elgarat-turns-69-years-oldhe-and-the-othe\/873983638106517\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Danish citizen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In July, Danny told Israeli news media that the Israeli military had told him that Itzhak was probably not alive, although there was some evidence that he had survived the attack and that his hand had been treated. Israeli officials did not confirm the death at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In October last year, Danny went on a hunger strike and protested daily near the Knesset, Israel\u2019s Parliament, to press for a hostage deal. In January, Danny said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/breaking-news\/article-839605\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an address to Israeli lawmakers<\/a> that his brother was likely dead and urged them to prioritize the release of living captives. \u201cLeave the bodies there,\u201d he said. \u201cBring back living people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There are roughly 25 living hostages still being held in Gaza, along with the bodies of more than 30 others, according to the Israeli government.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2389ab1e\">Tsachi Idan<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Idan was 49 when he was taken captive from his home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz. His oldest daughter, Maayan, 18, was shot and killed during the attack; she died in front of two of her siblings and her parents. Part of the family\u2019s experience was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/17\/technology\/hamas-hostages-social-media.html\" title=\"\">streamed live by the militants<\/a> after they got the password for the phone of his wife, Gali Idan. (Another daughter was not at home at the time.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Idan, in interviews after the ordeal, spoke about what the family had endured \u2014 she said that her husband had been taken away with his hands tied behind his back as their <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-67192885\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">children begged the militants<\/a>, who said that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/taken-captive-tsahi-idan-terrorists-promised-daughter-his-safe-return\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">he would return<\/a>, not to kill him. She and two of their children managed to escape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Idan\u2019s mother, Devorah Idan, spoke at a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/hostage-relatives-chastise-netanyahu-one-calls-him-sabotager-of-the-state\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">rally for the hostages<\/a> in Tel Aviv in August, describing the hostages\u2019 continued captivity as \u201ca nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His family said in a statement on Wednesday, after Hamas identified the bodies it would be handing over, that they were \u201cstill waiting for the much-needed certainty\u201d that confirmation of his death would bring. They said that only after his arrival in Israel and \u201cafter all necessary examinations are conducted by the authorized state authorities\u201d would they feel confident that the remains were Mr. Idan\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2cdbd095\">Ohad Yahalomi<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Yahalomi was shot during the 2023 attack in a gunfight with militants at his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/presumed-captive-ohad-yahalomi-shot-in-the-leg-by-terrorists\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">was taken hostage<\/a>. He was 49 at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His wife and three children were taken from their home \u2014 the couple\u2019s 12-year-old son was separated from his mother and siblings and was taken hostage, while the other three family members managed to escape. The boy, Eitan, was released in November 2023, during an earlier cease-fire deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Yahalomi\u2019s family said that he had worked for the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishjournal.org\/2024\/08\/22\/they-are-held-hostage-not-guests-not-prisoners-of-war\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">enthusiastic about wildlife<\/a>.
