After days on the run, Dattatray Ramdas Gade, accused of raping a 26-year-old woman inside a parked Shivshahi bus at Pune\u2019s Swargate depot, has been arrested. Pune Crime Branch officers tracked him down to a village in Shirur Tehsil, Pune district, and took him into custody just past midnight. Authorities had deployed thirteen police teams across multiple locations, using drones and sniffer dogs to comb sugarcane fields in search of him. A Rs 1 lakh reward had been announced for information leading to his capture.<\/p>\n

What happened in Pune: Survivor Misled and Assaulted<\/h2>\n

The attack happened early Tuesday morning. The survivor, a working woman, had been waiting at Swargate bus depot to board a bus to Phaltan, about 100 km away. Gade allegedly approached her, falsely claiming her bus was parked elsewhere. He then led her to an empty Shivshahi bus inside the depot. Once inside, he followed her in, assaulted her, and fled the scene.<\/p>\n

Gade, 37, is no stranger to law enforcement. He has a criminal record with six cases of theft, robbery, and chain-snatching registered against him in Pune and Ahilyanagar districts. In 2019, he was released on bail for one of these offences. His ability to remain free despite a record of crimes raises concerns over repeat offenders and the justice system\u2019s handling of them.<\/p>\n

Government\u2019s Response: Security Audit and Inquiry Ordered<\/h2>\n

Maharashtra\u2019s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, has ordered a comprehensive security audit of all bus stations and depots across the state. \u201cThe safety of passengers, especially women, is our top priority. Immediate measures are being taken to prevent such incidents,\u201d he said in a statement issued Thursday.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Sarnaik directed that all unregistered buses and seized vehicles be removed from transport hubs by April 15. He also called for an increase in female security guards at bus stations, citing the growing number of women travellers. To strengthen security oversight, he pushed for the vacant post of Chief Security and Vigilance Officer in the State Transport Corporation to be filled by an IPS officer.<\/p>\n


A departmental inquiry has been launched against the Assistant Transport Superintendent and the Bus Depot Manager of Swargate depot for potential lapses in security. Their role in ensuring public safety at the depot will be scrutinised.<\/p>\n

Public Outrage and Protests<\/h2>\n

The incident has sparked protests in Pune. Leaders and workers of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SCP took to the streets, demanding the strictest possible punishment for the accused. Protesters, carrying placards and chanting slogans, called for capital punishment and urgent reforms to improve women’s safety in public spaces.\u201cThe government must act now. We cannot allow such crimes to happen at our public transport hubs,\u201d one protester stated.<\/p>\n

The case has put a harsh spotlight on security at bus depots. While the government has announced measures, their implementation remains critical. Public transport facilities must be made safer, and past failures cannot be repeated. As legal proceedings against Gade move forward, all eyes will be on whether these security promises translate into real change.
