\n November 3, 2004<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> <\/strong>Is officially elected president of Afghanistan.\n <\/p>\n

\n December 7, 2004<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> <\/strong>Is inaugurated president of Afghanistan.\n <\/p>\n

\n September 18, 2005<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> <\/strong>First open parliamentary elections in 30 years.\n <\/p>\n

\n April 27, 2008<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> <\/strong>Narrowly escapes an assassination attempt at a military parade in Kabul.\n <\/p>\n

\n March 29, 2009<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> <\/strong>After the date of the presidential election is moved to August 2009, the Afghan Supreme Court rules that Karzai will remain in office for three months after his official term ends in May.\n <\/p>\n

\n August 20, 2009 – <\/strong>Afghanistan holds its second presidential election. Karzai wins by a landslide amid widespread allegations of low voter turnout, intimidation and fraud.\n <\/p>\n

\n October 31, 2009<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> <\/strong>A run-off election is canceled when Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah drops out, leaving Karzai as the only candidate and winner by default.\n <\/p>\n

\n November 19, 2009<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> Karzai is sworn in for a second term as president<\/a> of Afghanistan.\n <\/p>\n

\n May 12, 2010 –<\/strong> Meets with US President Barack Obama<\/a> at the White House.\n <\/p>\n

\n July 20, 2010 – <\/strong>Announces he would like to see Afghan security forces take the lead on military operations in Afghanistan<\/a> by 2014.\n <\/p>\n

\n January 26, 2011<\/strong> <\/strong>–<\/strong> Inaugurates the National Assembly, ending a political standoff between Karzai and the parliament. The inauguration comes four months after a nationwide election that critics said was marked by extensive fraud.\n <\/p>\n

\n September 29, 2014 – <\/strong>Steps down as president.\n <\/p>\n

\n June 2015 –<\/strong> Travels to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/a>\n <\/p>\n

\n February 5, 2019 – <\/strong>Travels to Moscow for a two-day conference to meet with members of the Taliban<\/a> and other key Afghan figures to set the stage for peace negotiations.\n <\/p>\n

\n December 2, 2021 – <\/strong>Following the Taliban takeover in August, in a BBC interview<\/a>, Karzai calls the Taliban \u201cbrothers\u201d and urges Afghans who have left Afghanistan to return. Karzai also urges the United States to return to help the Afghan people. Karzai says he has held conversations concerning when Afghan women and girls would return to school and work.\n <\/p>\n

\n December 3, 2022 – <\/strong>Leaves Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. Karzai reportedly faced travel restrictions. He is expected to visit the United Arab Emirates then Germany.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
