The town is a few miles from a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/02\/world\/europe\/russia-syria-bases.html\" title=\"\">major Russian air base<\/a> outside the coastal city of Latakia. There were no immediate reports of casualties, according to Syria\u2019s state news agency, SANA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hours later, the Israeli military conducted ground raids into two towns in southern Syria, cutting off roads and searching military barracks before blowing up warehouses and withdrawing, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitoring group based in Britain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The attacks came a week after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel demanded the \u201ccomplete demilitarization\u201d of much of southern Syria \u201cfrom the forces of the new regime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since the Assad regime <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/21\/world\/middleeast\/assad-regime-syria-final-days.html\" title=\"\">was toppled<\/a> in December by a lightning rebel offensive, Israel has carried out <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/10\/world\/middleeast\/israel-strikes-syria.html\" title=\"\">hundreds of airstrikes<\/a> in Syria that it says are aimed at preventing weapons falling into what it considers potentially hostile hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/11\/world\/middleeast\/syria-buffer-israel.html\" title=\"\">has also deployed forces<\/a> into a United Nations-monitored demilitarized zone at its border with Syria, and invaded border villages in southern Syria in what it described as temporary measures to protect its own security. Many Syrians fear that the incursions could morph into a prolonged military occupation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Syria\u2019s new government has said that Israel was violating its sovereignty. The attacks have been condemned internationally, with the United Nations <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/middle-east\/un-special-envoy-calls-for-full-restoration-of-syria-s-territorial-integrity\/3440413\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">saying in January<\/a> that the country\u2019s \u201cterritorial integrity, and unity must be fully restored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After violence broke out between Syrian government officers and armed men on the outskirts of Damascus last week, Mr. Netanyahu said he had instructed the military to defend the country\u2019s Druse minority from Syria\u2019s new rulers, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/02\/world\/middleeast\/syria-druse-clash.html\" title=\"\">a move that Syrian Druse and government leaders themselves rejected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Syria\u2019s interim president, Ahmed al-Shara, has repeatedly said that Syria is not seeking conflict with Israel.
