{"id":252113,"date":"2025-03-05T09:32:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T09:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/the-new-employment-rights-you-will-get-and-the-one-you-wont\/"},"modified":"2025-03-05T09:32:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T09:32:13","slug":"the-new-employment-rights-you-will-get-and-the-one-you-wont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/the-new-employment-rights-you-will-get-and-the-one-you-wont\/","title":{"rendered":"The new employment rights you will get &#8211; and the one you won&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/08\/768x432\/skynews-money-blog-deliveroo_6645265.jpg?20240802073109&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"The new employment rights you will get &#8211; and the one you won&#8217;t\" title=\"The new employment rights you will get &#8211; and the one you won&#8217;t\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"ui-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Protections for workers will be strengthened, the government has said, as it unveiled hundreds of amendments to the employment rights bill.<\/p>\n<p>Labour fought the 2024 general election on a manifesto promising to change the UK&#8217;s &#8220;outdated employment laws&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A central policy in Sir Keir Starmer&#8217;s manifesto has not made it into the bill, meaning people will not have a right to &#8220;switch off&#8221; outside work hours.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner said the government has had &#8220;really constructive dialogue&#8221; with trade unions and business, and hinted they may bring in the &#8220;switch off&#8221; right through another mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>The policy would allow workers to ignore work-related emails and calls outside office hours, including the right to refuse to take on extra work at the weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Rayner said the amendments show the government is &#8220;proudly pro-business and pro-worker&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/politics-latest-live-starmer-ukraine-zelenskyy-war-trump-macron-meloni-king-12593360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Politics latest: Ex-ministers who served in army hit out at Vance<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, employers are concerned that the new employment laws will push costs up further, in addition to the increase in taxes and the minimum wage coming in from April.<\/p>\n<p>The 250 amendments also do not include any changes where employers had raised their biggest concerns, including the introduction of day one protection against unfair dismissal, a large upgrade of union rights and a near-ban on the use of &#8220;fire and rehire&#8221; tactics.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the main amendments explained:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ban on zero-hours contracts for agency workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Agency workers will be included in a new law, meaning workers should be able to access a contract that guarantees a minimum number of hours every week.<\/p>\n<p>The government said this will ensure agency work does not become a loophole to end zero-hours contracts.<\/p>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/download-app\" target=\"blank\" data-tracking-label=\"ui-app-promo-download-link\" class=\"ui-app-promo sdc-article-widget\" data-type=\"\" data-component-name=\"ui-app-promo\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>It will offer &#8220;increased security&#8221; for workers to receive &#8220;reasonable notice&#8221; of shifts and proportionate pay when shifts are cancelled, curtailed or moved at short notice.<\/p>\n<p>Unions welcomed the amendment but the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, which represents agency workers, said the change should not &#8220;undermine&#8221; the &#8220;flexibility&#8221; that zero-hour contracts offer some workers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Zero-hour worker contracts will be extended to agency staff.
