Then, with a confident nod, he added, \u201cWe will make you rich.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some members of Congress responded with a mix of applause, murmurs \u2014 and a few smiles. Greenlanders weren\u2019t so enthused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is up to us whether we become rich,\u201d said Pele Broberg, the leader of one of Greenland\u2019s major political parties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has been talking about acquiring Greenland, a large island in the Arctic Ocean, since his first term, but this was the first time he addressed the island\u2019s 56,000 residents so directly and prominently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very small population but very, very large piece of land and very, very important for military security,\u201d he told lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And, he added, \u201cI think we\u2019re going to get it \u2014 one way or the other, we\u2019re going to get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s comments \u2014 and his open desire to obtain Greenland \u2014 come just as the island is weighing an unrelated decision about its own sovereignty. Denmark colonized Greenland 300 years ago and, while it has devolved some authority to the island over the last half century, it still controls key aspects of the island\u2019s governance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Next week, Greenlanders will vote in a parliamentary election that could be one of the most decisive in their history. Several leading Greenlandic politicians have openly called for independence, but the pace \u2014 and even the certainty \u2014 of that process will depend on the election\u2019s outcome. Some parties are pushing for swift action, while others support a more gradual approach or not severing ties with Denmark at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s just completely wild,\u201d said Nino Bronlund, a student teacher, about Mr. Trump\u2019s claim that America would \u201cget\u201d Greenland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s only about money and security,\u201d he said, speaking as he was walking to school in the capital, Nuuk. \u201cI don\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Anne-Katrine Nielsen, a senior assistant at Greenland\u2019s police force, said she was also shocked by Mr. Trump\u2019s speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe doesn\u2019t care about the people,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is only after our uranium, our mines and our strategic location in the world. We are right in the middle of everything, so I believe that\u2019s what he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/03\/world\/europe\/greenland-minerals-trump.html\" title=\"\">Greenland has enormous untapped resources,<\/a> including rare earth minerals that are vital to high-tech industries and have attracted feverish geopolitical competition. Vice President JD Vance has spoken of Greenland\u2019s \u201cincredible natural resources,\u201d and Republican senators recently held a hearing on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/2025\/2\/nuuk-and-cranny-looking-at-the-arctic-and-greenland-s-geostrategic-importance-to-u-s-interests_2\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGreenland\u2019s Geostrategic Importance.\u201d<\/a> But extreme weather, fired-up environmentalists and other factors have tempered hopes of a bonanza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During his first term, Mr. Trump floated the idea of the United States buying Greenland from Denmark, which essentially said no way.
