Security forces, including the CRPF, BSF, Army, Assam Rifles, RAF, and District Police, conducted a flag march in the Moirang, Kumbi, and Nambol areas of Bishnupur district, Manipur<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This comes in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah<\/a>\u2019s March 1 directive to ensure the free movement of vehicles on state highways starting March 8. The highways have remained inaccessible due to ethnic strife between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023, a conflict that has claimed over 258 lives and displaced more than 60,000 people.<\/p>\n

The flag march aims to restore order and instill confidence among the public ahead of the deadline. While the move has been welcomed by COCOMI, a Meitei civil society group, and valley-based women\u2019s organizations, who have urged strict action against any obstruction, opposition has emerged from COTU, a Kuki-Zo organization based in Kangpokpi.<\/p>\n

On March 3, at Phaijang\u2019s Martyrs\u2019 Cemetery, COTU warned of “consequences” if the directive is enforced without addressing their longstanding demand for a separate administration. With Manipur under President\u2019s Rule since February, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla is under pressure to ensure law and order.<\/p>\n

On March 4, he held a security review with top officials, reaffirming the need to implement Shah\u2019s directive. To enforce compliance, security must be reinforced, with intensified patrols along critical routes such as NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur via Kangpokpi) to prevent blockades.<\/p>\n


Additionally, the administration must actively engage with key stakeholders, including COCOMI, COTU, and other community leaders, to ease tensions and address security concerns. Ensuring law enforcement remains impartial is crucial; any attempt to obstruct highways must be met with firm action, irrespective of the group involved.A dedicated task force should be established to monitor the implementation of the directive, providing daily progress reports. Furthermore, steps must be taken to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential goods to all affected areas, mitigating the impact of blockades and preventing humanitarian crises.<\/div>\n
