So, I think we will come out very strong from it.” Harmonised system nomenclature (HSN) is used to classify products for taxation, imports and exports, and more. Vaishnaw’s comments come at a time when US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats have led to global upheaval. The minister exhorted the captains of industry to choose 25-30 products and invest in them. He assured them that if they take a step forward, the government would be ready to take 10 steps with them. “For example, in mobile phone manufacturing, I know Mr Chandra (N Chandrasekaran of Tata Sons) has already done very good work getting some firms from Pune and Coimbatore to actually design and manufacture capital goods there,” he said.

“Can we take that as a challenge and start developing some of those goods in our own fields? If it is the tech industry, can the IT industry invest in three foundational models… in creating our own mobile phone operating system?” India is working holistically to address the opportunity that AI presents, Vaishnaw said, pointing to the five segments — chips, foundational models, applications, data centres and hyperscalers, and talent. “We are working across all the five layers,” he said.

“We should have three foundational models by the end of this year. Developing our own GPU… we should be having in the next three to four years. We are on track. Just a couple of days ago, we launched the 14,000 GPU common compute facility. We had targeted 10,000 and we actually got 14,000 GPUs. That’s a common compute facility available for all startups, academia, entrepreneurs, researchers, everybody.” The minister said the world is sitting up and taking notice of this approach as India is one of the few countries where public funds are being pumped in to build a common compute facility.

‘PHENOMENAL’ WORK

Speaking of his other portfolio, Vaishnaw said the last 11 years had been “phenomenal” for the Indian Railways — the government had electrified about 45,000 km of the railway network in the past decade and laid 34,000 km tracks in the last 11 years. “That’s more than the entire network of Germany,” he said. “We are today manufacturing 1,500 locomotives a year. That’s more than the entire locomotive production in North America and Europe put together. That’s the pace at which we are working and many new products are coming up,” he said.

“A lot more work to be done and lots of things are in the pipeline. It requires a huge effort because it’s a humongous organisation — 1.5 lakh km of tracks, now 12.34 lakh employees.” He also highlighted that heavy investment was being made toward technology in the railways, ranging from track inspection machines to drawing up schedules so there’s enough time for maintenance.

Vaishnaw said, “Today we are investing Rs 1.14 lakh crore in safety-related activities and the results are there. Just 10 years ago, it used to be about 171 accidents a year. Now that number has come down to 30 and that’s not something we should be satisfied at. We are still putting in a huge effort and the results are visible.”

The minister also said that when it came to the “brain drain,” India was now in a position where there are opportunities for top talent to thrive domestically. He said there were many examples of people coming back to work in India. “Dr Randhir Thakur is one good example in the field of semiconductors,” Vaishnaw said.

“He has come back from the US and is now leading our entire fab initiative. And (there are) many more people. When I talk to the professionals or entrepreneurs and startup teams out there in the US, a large number of them are actually coming back; they want to contribute. The opportunities are there today. Ten years ago, it was a very different conversation. Today, our Prime Minister’s policies have led to India becoming among the top three startup nations.”

Source link

India will emerge as a formidable power from the current geopolitical shift due to its pragmatic approach, said minister for railways, information and broadcasting, and electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw.
