This initiative will introduce electric-solar hybrid boats, offering a greener way to explore the river.

A Sustainable River Cruise Experience

The project will see the introduction of hybrid boats designed to carry 20-30 passengers at a time. These vessels will be equipped with bio-toilets, public announcement systems, and life jackets to ensure both safety and convenience. Additionally, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) jetties will be installed to facilitate smooth ferry operations.

“The move aims to boost tourism and create a new river cruise experience for visitors. The initiative focuses on transforming the river between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur in Delhi with a focus on eco-friendly cruise operations,” said an IWAI official.

Government Agencies Join Hands

This ambitious plan is a collaboration between several government agencies. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed by the IWAI, the Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Delhi Jal Board, and the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). The partnership plans to develop the stretch of the Yamuna into a popular water tourism destination while ensuring sustainable navigation.

According to officials, the designated stretch lies within National Waterway (NW) 110, just upstream of the Wazirabad Barrage. The initiative is expected to encourage short-distance water travel and recreational activities, making the river more accessible for both tourists and locals.

A Project Years in the Making

The concept of water transport on the Yamuna is not new. In 2018, the central government had proposed a water taxi project on a 16-kilometre stretch from Wazirabad to Fatehpur Jat. However, environmental concerns led to a review of the plan. In 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) referred the matter to a principal committee, which advised a reassessment to factor in the ecological impact on Delhi’s primary drinking water reservoir.Despite these hurdles, interest in river-based transport persisted. In September last year, the IWAI issued an expression of interest (EOI) for ferry services along an 8-kilometre loop between Sonia Vihar and the Wazirabad Barrage. The EOI specified that the boats should be electric or solar hybrid, with a seating capacity of 20-30 passengers. “The speed should be around 5 to 7 knots, with a maximum draft of 1.2 metres,” it stated.

A Step Towards Cleaner and Greener Transport

Officials say the project is expected to reshape Delhi’s tourism landscape. “It will help in reshaping the tourism landscape in Delhi by enhancing sustainable travel experiences,” said an IWAI official.

By embracing clean energy solutions, the initiative aligns with broader environmental goals. The focus on electric-solar hybrid boats ensures minimal pollution, making it an attractive alternative to conventional transport modes. If successful, the project could pave the way for more such initiatives, integrating waterways into Delhi’s transport and tourism network.

Once launched, the river cruises will not only offer a scenic journey but also reinforce Delhi’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility.

Source link

The Yamuna is set to witness a transformation.
