Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty<\/a> on Tuesday urged the Union Government to introduce a robust training programme for school teachers to help them stay updated.<\/p>\n

Murty, a former chairperson of Infosys<\/a> Foundation, made a strong pitch for periodic training of schoolteachers to elevate the standards of education, while speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. She said she has noticed such training programmes in quite a few countries successfully helping teachers as well as students there.<\/p>\n

Murty\u2019s speech in the Rajya Sabha echoed similar sentiments often expressed by her husband, Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy<\/a>, who has advocated for the Union Government to allocate $1 billion annually for 20 years to train schoolteachers and maximise the benefits of the National Education Policy (NEP).<\/p>\n

The RS member said teachers play a crucial role in the education system, not just through their qualifications but also in their teaching methodology. \u201cIf you don’t have good teachers, even the best policies won\u2019t help. The system will not improve. I urge the education department to invest in teacher training.\u201d<\/p>\n

The popular author insisted that the training programme must also include a periodic examination, maybe once in three years, to test the knowledge of teachers in emerging trends and advancements in their subject. \u201cThis should be enforced, especially in primary education. The ages of 3-9 are formative years, and all teachers handling this stage should pass these tests,\u201d she said, adding that a bad teacher can spoil the entire batch.<\/p>\n

Earlier, in a conversation with ET, Narayana Murthy had suggested that Indian teachers should be sent to the United Kingdom for two years of training, citing its strong early education system.<\/p>\n
