Masked gunmen who killed nine people after abducting them from a bus in southwest Pakistan are being hunted by police as the country’s prime minister vowed they would be “punished”.<\/p>\n

The gang had earlier shot dead two more people and wounded six others in a car, when they failed to stop at a makeshift roadblock.<\/p>\n

The deadly kidnapping happened on Friday in Pakistan’s <\/a><\/strong>Baluchistan province, where separatists have been battling for independence.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Saturday, district deputy commissioner Habibullah Mosakhail said the gunmen set up a blockade, then stopped the bus and went through the passengers’ identity cards.<\/p>\n

They took nine people hostage, all from the eastern Punjab province.<\/p>\n

The bus was heading from the provincial capital of Quetta to Taftan, a town bordering Iran.<\/p>\n

Police later found the victims’ bullet-riddled bodies under a bridge about three miles from the road.<\/p>\n

They had been shot at close range.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, expressing his “deep sorrow and regret over this shocking incident”.<\/p>\n

He offered his condolences to the families of the victims and said he stood by them in their grief, according to a statement from his office.<\/p>\n

“The perpetrators of this incident of terrorism and their facilitators will be punished,” he added.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the killings.<\/p>\n

Police said there was no ransom demand and no indication of a motive.<\/p>\n

Separatist ethnic Baloch militant groups in the mineral-rich region have been fighting for decades against the state, arguing it denies them their fair share of its resources.<\/p>\n

The insurgents have previously claimed responsibility for similar attacks in the region.<\/p>\n

They have also targeted Chinese citizens and their interests with Beijing investing heavily in regional development projects.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
