He argued that dresses crafted by non-Hindus should not be used, claiming, “If any heretic who does not follow our religion offers anything made by their hands to Thakurji (Lord Krishna), it cannot be accepted, and those who do so are committing a grave sin.”

Temple’s Stance: Faith Over Division

Responding to the proposal, temple committee member Gyanendra Kishor Goswami told TOI, “We received a proposal to stop using ‘poshaks’ (attire) made by Muslim weavers. Our primary concern is to ensure purity and sanctity of the ‘poshaks’ offered to Thakurji. If members of the Muslim community have faith in Thakurji, we have no objection to accepting ‘poshaks’ from them.” He further stated that anyone is free to submit proposals, but the temple would not discriminate based on religion.

The Banke Bihari Temple, a 164-year-old pilgrimage site, sees an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 devotees daily. On weekends and festivals, the number exceeds one lakh, drawing visitors from across India and abroad.

A Tradition of Harmony in Vrindavan’s Textile Industry

Vrindavan has long been home to a thriving textile industry dedicated to crafting religious garments. According to Dainik Bhaskar, the city has around 40 factories making ‘poshaks’ for deities, employing over 10,000 Muslim artisans. This tradition has existed for 50-60 years without controversy. These skilled artisans do not just create garments for Lord Krishna but also for Radha and other deities across Vrindavan’s many temples.

Live Events

A weaver involved in the trade explained that special care is taken to maintain purity while making the attire. While Krishna’s garments take one to two days to complete, Radha Rani’s lehenga can take up to a week, costing between ₹8,000-₹10,000. These garments are also exported worldwide, including to the US, UK, France, Japan, Nepal, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Religious Sensitivities Amidst Upcoming Holi Festivities

This debate unfolds as Vrindavan prepares for Holi, a festival deeply tied to Lord Krishna’s legends. The festival will coincide with Jumma prayers on 14 March, raising concerns about communal sensitivities in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Political figures have also made contentious statements ahead of the celebrations.Holi is celebrated on a grand scale in Vrindavan, where it is believed that Krishna once played Holi with Radha and the ‘gopis’ in the forests. The ‘Phoolon ki Holi’ event at the Banke Bihari Temple is a major attraction every year.

City Magistrate to Examine the Matter

When asked about the memorandum, city magistrate Rakesh Kumar told TOI, “I am not aware of the memorandum submitted by Dinesh Falahari, but I will look into the matter.” While the temple has clarified its stance, the issue continues to stir discussions around religious harmony and tradition in Vrindavan.

Source link

Authorities at the historic Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan have dismissed a proposal to ban dresses made by Muslim artisans for Lord Krishna.
