{"id":259240,"date":"2025-03-14T21:19:33","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T21:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/14\/g7-foreign-ministers-agree-on-ukraine-policy-amid-tensions-over-trump-tariffs\/"},"modified":"2025-03-14T21:19:33","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T21:19:33","slug":"g7-foreign-ministers-agree-on-ukraine-policy-amid-tensions-over-trump-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/14\/g7-foreign-ministers-agree-on-ukraine-policy-amid-tensions-over-trump-tariffs\/","title":{"rendered":"G7 Foreign Ministers Agree on Ukraine Policy Amid Tensions Over Trump Tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2025\/03\/14\/multimedia\/14int-canada-g7-mfcq\/14int-canada-g7-mfcq-facebookJumbo.jpg?ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"G7 Foreign Ministers Agree on Ukraine Policy Amid Tensions Over Trump Tariffs\" title=\"G7 Foreign Ministers Agree on Ukraine Policy Amid Tensions Over Trump Tariffs\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite high tensions between the Trump administration and some of America\u2019s closest allies over tariffs and Ukraine, foreign ministers from the Group of 7 industrialized democracies who were meeting this week in Canada forged common ground in a communiqu\u00e9 that glossed over many of their sharp differences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Top diplomats from Canada, the host of the gathering, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Union meeting at the idyllic resort town of La Malbaie in Charlevoix, Quebec, presented a cautiously united front, notably on Ukraine, a key point of divergence since President Trump took office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement released on Friday, the group affirmed its support for Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and committed to supporting the \u201cpolitical aspirations\u201d of Israelis and Palestinians, although it did not mention support for a two-state solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Reaching some consensus on Ukraine and Russia was considered a feat given Mr. Trump\u2019s public criticism of Kyiv, although the group\u2019s language on the subject was less vehement than in past years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Secretary of State Marco Rubio found himself among allies in difficult circumstances, especially with his Canadian hosts, who resent Mr. Trump\u2019s talk of annexing their country and turning it into \u201cthe 51st state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That rhetoric, which loomed over the 48 hours that ministers spent together in Quebec, drew a sharp rebuke from Canada\u2019s foreign minister, M\u00e9lanie Joly, who told reporters on Friday that she had told Mr. Rubio that \u201cCanada\u2019s sovereignty is not up to debate, period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s no argument, there\u2019s no conversation about it, there\u2019s no need to talk about it,\u201d she added. \u201cYou\u2019re here, you respect us, you respect our sovereignty, you\u2019re in our country, you respect our people. Period.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Canada has also been more assertive in demanding that allies stand up for its sovereignty, but ministers in Quebec walked a fine line between supporting Canada and avoiding getting on the wrong side of Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Annalena Baerbock, the German foreign minister, and Kaja Kallas, the top European Union diplomat, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ABaerbock\/status\/1900182399696179438\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">posted photos of themselves<\/a> dressed in red and white, Canada\u2019s national colors. \u201cWe\u2019ve got your back,\u201d their post, addressed to Ms. Joly, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBorders are inviolable,\u201d Ms. Baerbock told journalists on Friday, \u201cin Ukraine, in Greenland, in Panama, in Canada and anywhere in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump on Thursday threatened to slap 200 percent tariffs on European Union exports of alcohol, a message that went down badly with France and Italy, the bloc\u2019s major alcohol-exporting nations among the Group of 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And more tariffs are looming on April 2, as Mr. Trump has promised a comprehensive reboot in the United States\u2019 trade relationship with the world, applying what he calls \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs on trading partners globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the center of the storm was Mr. Rubio, making his first appearance at an international summit since he became Mr. Trump\u2019s top diplomat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was an awkward assignment for Mr. Rubio, given the anger and confusion over Mr. Trump\u2019s policies among the officials at the meeting, and there were signs that he was not eager to spend more time with them than necessary. Mr. Rubio was notably absent from a Wednesday social event at which other ministers nibbled on s\u2019mores and from another event on Thursday that featured Canadian maple taffy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Complicating the situation for Mr. Rubio was the shadow of Mr. Trump\u2019s talk of annexing the gathering\u2019s host nation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When asked by reporters on Monday about the president\u2019s recent talk that a 1908 treaty delineating the U.S.-Canada border could be torn up, Mr. Rubio briefly seemed at a loss for words. He then dismissed the topic by saying that it was \u201cnot on the agenda\u201d for the Group of 7 gathering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Asked again on Wednesday about Mr. Trump\u2019s threats, Mr. Rubio emphasized points of unity between the United States and Canada, adding: \u201cIt is not a meeting about how we\u2019re going to take over Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump returned to the subject on Thursday, telling reporters in the Oval Office that \u201cCanada only works\u201d as an American state.
