The strikes killed at least 31 people and wounded 101, \u201cmost of whom were children and women,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/alasbahi_dr\/status\/1901126788694024633\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said Anis al-Asbahi<\/a>, a spokesman for the Houthi-run health ministry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The casualty figures could not be independently verified, and the United States has not given any estimates for the number of people killed or wounded in the strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The U.S. Central Command, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/1901043879496876459\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">posted a video<\/a> of a bomb leveling a building compound in Yemen, said that the United States had employed precision strikes to \u201cdefend American interests, deter enemies, and restore freedom of navigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">U.S. airstrikes also targeted a power facility in the northwestern town of Dahyan, in Saada Province, causing a nightlong electricity blackout, residents said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Houthi-run Al-Masirah television channel reported that 13 people were killed and nine others wounded in airstrikes on al-Jeraf, a district in Sana considered a stronghold of the group. In Saada Province, in the northwest, 10 people, including four children, were killed when airstrikes hit two buildings, the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Residents in Sana shared images and videos on social media showing shattered windows and fireballs rising from sites that were hit. Others posted anguished messages as the airstrikes hit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Abdul Rahman al-Nuerah, a resident of Sana, said the blasts shattered the windows of his home and terrified his four children. \u201cI instantly embraced and comforted them,\u201d Mr. al-Nuerah said by telephone. \u201cChildren and mothers are afraid and still in shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a senior Houthi leader, vowed retaliation against the United States, calling the strikes unjustified. \u201cWe shall respond to the escalation by escalating,\u201d he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/M_N_Albukhaiti\/status\/1900991380480012305\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on the social media platform X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Houthi rebels, who control most of northern Yemen, had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/20\/world\/israel-hamas-cease-fire#houthi-rebels-say-they-will-limit-attacks-in-the-red-sea-to-ships-linked-to-israel\" title=\"\">temporarily halted attacks in the Red Sea<\/a> when a cease-fire took effect in Gaza in January. But last week, they announced that they would target any Israeli ships violating their ban on Israeli vessels passing through the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Bab-el-Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Bab el-Mandeb is a strait between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, which opens into the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Mr. Trump said the strikes were also intended as a warning to Iran, the Houthis\u2019 main backer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSupport for the Houthi terrorists must end IMMEDIATELY!\u201d he wrote. He also warned Iran against threatening the United States, saying, \u201cAmerica will hold you fully accountable, and we won\u2019t be nice about it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Days after taking office, Mr. Trump issued an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/23\/world\/middleeast\/trump-yemen-houthi-rebels-terrorists.html\" title=\"\">executive order<\/a> to redesignate the Houthis a \u201cforeign terrorist organization,\u201d calling the group a threat to regional security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The order restored a designation given to the group late in the first Trump administration.
