{"id":260083,"date":"2025-03-16T15:59:14","date_gmt":"2025-03-16T15:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/16\/conservatives-push-for-ban-on-phones-in-schools\/"},"modified":"2025-03-16T15:59:14","modified_gmt":"2025-03-16T15:59:14","slug":"conservatives-push-for-ban-on-phones-in-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/16\/conservatives-push-for-ban-on-phones-in-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservatives push for ban on phones in schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/branded_news\/b639\/live\/2537abc0-0275-11f0-a565-714eb53f108a.jpg?ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Conservatives push for ban on phones in schools\" title=\"Conservatives push for ban on phones in schools\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The Conservatives have said they will push for MPs to be given a vote on banning mobile phones in schools this week.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The party will attempt to amend the Labour government&#8217;s Children&#8217;s Wellbeing and Schools Bill to include the ban.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Speaking to the BBC&#8217;s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott said ending phone use in schools was a &#8220;no-brainer&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The previous Tory government <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/educationhub.blog.gov.uk\/2024\/10\/mobile-phones-in-schools-are-they-being-banned\/#:~:text=An%20outright%20ban%20of%20phones,works%20for%20their%20individual%20settings.\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" rel=\"noopener\">issued guidance<!-- --><\/a> to schools last year but Trott said this &#8220;hasn&#8217;t worked&#8221;, with too many children still using the devices in classrooms.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;So now it is time to make it law,&#8221; Trott said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The BBC has sought comment from the Department for Education.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The Conservative amendment would needed to be backed by a majority of MPs to be added to the schools bill.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">But the bid to change the bill is unlikely to succeed given Labour has a working majority of 167 MPs.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">When asked if her party had a chance of adding the phone ban to the bill, Trott said: &#8220;I&#8217;ve got to make the argument.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve got to &#8230; encourage parents, teachers, children up and down the country to petition their MPs to vote for this because it is incredibly important. It will make a massive difference.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The Labour government is not thought to have any plans to impose a blanket ban.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Last year, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c89l5q82qz5o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" rel=\"noopener\">technology secretary Peter Kyle told the BBC<!-- --><\/a> that he was not aware of &#8220;a single school&#8221; in his constituency that allowed the devices to be used &#8220;freely&#8221; during the school day &#8220;and certainly not in classrooms&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy8plvqv60lo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" rel=\"noopener\">A recent study suggested<!-- --><\/a> banning phones in schools was not linked to pupils getting higher grades or having better mental wellbeing.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Last week, another bill that had suggested banning phones in schools <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cq8y7dvw9ddo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" rel=\"noopener\">was watered down<!-- --><\/a> to gain government support.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Labour MP Josh MacAlister, who brought the private members&#8217; bill, told MPs that reducing phone use in law would be a &#8220;process&#8221;, not one &#8220;big bang&#8221; event.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The proposed legislation calls for the government to say within a year whether it will raise the digital age of consent from 13 to 16 &#8211; meaning companies could not receive children&#8217;s data without parental permission until that age.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Data Protection and Telecoms Minister Chris Bryant said the bill&#8217;s recommendations &#8220;very much chime with what we intend to do&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Private members&#8217; bills rarely make it into law without government backing, but they are an opportunity for backbenchers to raise an issue&#8217;s profile.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cg4k0vw190go\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Conservatives have said they will push for MPs to be given a vote on banning mobile phones in schools this week.
