The building\u2019s roof was set ablaze by fireworks used during a concert, officials have said. At least 155 people were injured in the inferno that swept through the venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI will have no mercy,\u201d Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/vlada.mk\/node\/38565\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> on Sunday, adding, \u201cThere is no person in Macedonia who is not broken and with a destroyed spirit after this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Mickoski, who took power in June, said the club, which was in Kocani, about 50 miles east of the capital, Skopje, had a license document that had been issued \u201cfor a bribe.\u201d He said the document bore the seal of the economic ministry and the signatures of former officials there, and that it was \u201cissued illegally.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is the culmination of a bad, neglected system,\u201d Mr. Mickoski said, describing North Macedonia\u2019s effort to root out corruption, which the European Commission described in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/enlargement.ec.europa.eu\/document\/download\/5f0c9185-ce46-46fc-bf44-82318ab47e88_en?filename=North%20Macedonia%20Report%202024.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2024 report<\/a> as a \u201cserious concern\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The building that housed Club Pulse was registered as an industrial facility \u2014 not a hospitality venue \u2014 but had still received a hospitality permit from the economy ministry, the public prosecutor, Ljupco Kocevski, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?mibextid=wwXIfr&amp;v=1666739857565171&amp;rdid=dvu7DoUIHPB3Q2vn\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said on Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The police summoned a former economy minister, Kreshnik Bekteshi, for questioning, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mia.mk\/en\/story\/police-calls-execonomy-minister-bekteshi-for-questioning-over-kochani-fatal-blaze\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to MIA<\/a>, a state-run news agency. Mr. Bekteshi did not respond to a request for comment. Officers also detained another former official from the ministry, as well as other officials in other government agencies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ljupco Papazov, the Kocani mayor, resigned on Monday. \u201cThe shock and brokenness I feel will last my entire life,\u201d he said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=669026982165584&amp;id=100071748644967&amp;mibextid=wwXIfr&amp;rdid=QgIjduqeP3F9iaRa#\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some parents who had lost children in the inferno had expressed fury with Mr. Papazov for maintaining a low profile the previous day. \u201cWhy is the mayor not here?\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yjFDUvE1mDE\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">shouted<\/a> Dragi Stojanov, whose only child died in the fire, in a video from The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an online direct message, Mr. Papazov said he had been busy coordinating aid after the tragedy, and that he had resigned for unspecified \u201cmoral reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Stojanov said he had no reason to live after his 21-year-old son was killed. \u201cI lost everything,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/videos\/c20ld3wj0npo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Stojanov\u2019s son was one of many young people who had come to Club Pulse to see <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dnk.mk\/?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">DNK<\/a>, a popular North Macedonian group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As the band performed, sparklers were set off around them, video shows. Those sparklers, officials said, were used illegally and appear to have started the fire. \u201cThe pyrotechnic devices used in the nightclub were brought by the band,\u201d the country\u2019s interior minister, Panche Toshkovski, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1401569917924845\/?mibextid=wwXIfr&amp;share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2Fr%2F16AQTdNwM3%2F%3Fmibextid%3DwwXIfr&amp;rdid=tC8PMA4BkwpnIbOg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cUnfortunately,\u201d he said, \u201cthe person who was responsible for handling them has passed away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One member of DNK died, as did other artists performing that night, Biljana Arsovska, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor, wrote in an email. She said officials had not finished identifying victims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI feel as if someone hit me with an aluminum baseball bat,\u201d Tijana Dapcevic, a Macedonian singer who knew some of the victims, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She said a friend of hers, Sara Projkovska, had died in the fire. Ms. Projkovska was a professor at Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, which announced her death in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=572687039119194&amp;id=100091337071496&amp;mibextid=wwXIfr&amp;rdid=KBfD6hp6XPGtE02d#\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook post<\/a> with her picture, smiling under a mane of hot pink hair. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday afternoon, thousands of people gathered in Skopje at the university, in honor of the fire\u2019s victims, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/15axsrFX4U\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">news footage showed<\/a>. Many also gathered to protest in Kocani, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1AMB9jHSkE\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">news footage<\/a> shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Pictures of the victims had already begun to appear on Macedonian social media, like a yearbook of people whose lives were cut short amid flames and smoke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One was Petar Ivanovski, a young man with thick eyebrows and a smile, whose university confirmed his death in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100064636751571\/posts\/1052742273556988\/?mibextid=wwXIfr&amp;rdid=Z47qLZQEjaSmQhRc#\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another, Andrej Lazarov, 25, was a professional soccer player. He was remembered by his team, F.C. Shkupi, in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/18opHw2gDD\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> photo that showed him playing.<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cA lot of children have suffered,\u201d Simeon Sokolov, whose daughter was on a respirator after inhaling smoke, told the Serbian television channel N1 on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe doctors are doing all they can,\u201d Mr. Sokolov added, \u201cbut there are too many injured.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many, furious and grieving, pointed to what they saw as gross negligence at the club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There were no side doors for evacuation, said Mr. Kocevski, the public prosecutor: \u201cInstead, there was only one improvised metal door at the back, which was blocked from the inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The nightclub did not have a functioning hydrant, he added.
