The missing head seemed to briefly reappear in January, when a video posted on Instagram showed it on a barbecue grill, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DFRkYrXyoLj\/?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">lit on fire<\/a>. But it has been missing, again, ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAllegedly his head was cut off last year in the city..\u2026anyways he was put on stage for a few tunes and then whisked away,\u201d the group wrote in its post. \u201cRemember every colony can fall \ud83d\udd25\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kneecap \u2014 a trio composed of the West Belfast musicians Mo Chara, Moglai Bap and DJ Provai \u2014 has raucously burst into the mainstream over the past year with a critically acclaimed, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/01\/movies\/kneecap-review.html\" title=\"\">truth-adjacent biopic<\/a>. The group is known for its high-volume Republican politics and gleefully inebriated shows, in which its frontman, Bap, regularly appears shirtless and slugging from a bottle of Buckfast, the cheap tonic wine that is a universal Irish touchstone for a messy night out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Central to the group\u2019s ethos are anti-colonialist politics and promotion of the Indigenous language. Bap, Chara and DJ Provai perform in both Irish and English, and they <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/16\/arts\/music\/kneecap-irish-rap-celtic-revival.html\" title=\"\">have spoken often<\/a> about the importance of promoting and preserving the Irish language, which was banned across the island during British occupation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The group has less courted controversy than brazenly promoted it: Around the same time that King George V\u2019s head was separated from the statue, the group tore through the British Museum in London, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/news\/northern-ireland\/kneecap-place-stolen-from-ireland-stickers-around-british-museum-in-london\/a1492923188.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">placing Kneecap-branded \u201cStolen from Ireland\u201d stickers<\/a> on various artifacts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kneecap did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The police in Melbourne confirmed that they were still investigating the decapitation of the statue and that they were aware of its possible recent weekend out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMelbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives continue to investigate damage to a statue in Kings Domain last year,\u201d the police said in a statement. \u201cInvestigators are also aware that the head from what appears to be a statue appeared at a concert in Melbourne on 14 March. Detectives will investigate whether there is any link between the two incidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The statue was decapitated last June during a holiday begun to celebrate the British king\u2019s birthday. Australia established itself as an independent commonwealth in 1901 and formally severed any remaining ties to Britain in 1986.
