External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar<\/a> on Wednesday said whether we would like it or not tariffs and sanctions are a reality and countries use them. <\/p>\n

Speaking on \u2018Commissars and Capitalists: Politics, Business, and New World Order\u2019 at Raisina Dialogue 2025<\/a>, the minister was asked whether trade barriers, tariffs and tech sanctions or restrictions have any place in India’s foreign policy, to which he said, “Tariffs, sanctions, I think, whether we would like it or not they are a reality, countries use them. In fact, if one looks at the last decade, I would say we have seen a much greater weaponization of pretty much any kind of capability or any kind of economic activity. It could be financial flows, energy supplies or technology.”<\/p>\n

He said, “This is a reality of the world… You are fighting for your comprehensive national power, of which business makes a very important contribution.”

Underlining the developing international relations across the globe, he added, “I think today, the lines dividing different domains have eroded. If you see in international relations, I think it’s a less restrained culture today than it was a decade ago.”<\/p>\n

“This is a reality of the world. You fight for your business, because you are fighting for your employment, you are fighting for your comprehensive national power, of which business makes a very important contribution,” Jaishankar said.<\/p>\n

Jaishankar’s remarks come just days before the Trump administration’s looming reciprocal tariffs, set to take effect on April 2nd, which will impact several countries, including India. While other countries brace for impact, India\u2019s strategy is more of wait and watch.Trump has time and again called out India to be among the nations that charge the US the highest tariffs. While Trump has praised Modi often, he has called India a tariff abuser. In the February meeting, Trump and Modi discussed trade issues and the nations are working on a trade deal. Trump, nonetheless, wants actions from India that should be beneficial for his land, including India buying more oil from the US.Trump’s close ally Elon Musk meanwhile also seems to be getting some advantage in India these days. While Tesla is about to enter India, telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel<\/a> also signed deals with Starlink.

Trust, tariffs, and tough choices<\/strong>
Trump\u2019s unpredictability has frequently blindsided even his closest allies \u2014 Europe being a prime example. Recall when Trump once called Modi a “tough negotiator”? Those words may now be put to the test, as Indian exporters \u2014 particularly in automobiles and agriculture \u2014 prepare for potential tariff pain.<\/p>\n

Despite this uncertainty, Modi and Trump have been working to mend trade ties. After their meeting last month, both leaders agreed to address tariff disputes<\/a> and push forward with a phased trade deal by fall 2025, targeting $500 billion in two-way trade by 2030. Modi even aligned Trump\u2019s “America First” stance with his own “India First<\/a>” vision, emphasizing their diplomatic bond.
