{"id":262160,"date":"2025-03-19T13:00:51","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T13:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/19\/fresh-evidence-of-global-warming-as-politicians-question-climate-action\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T13:00:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T13:00:51","slug":"fresh-evidence-of-global-warming-as-politicians-question-climate-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/19\/fresh-evidence-of-global-warming-as-politicians-question-climate-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh evidence of global warming &#8211; as politicians question climate action"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/21948969\/thumbnail?ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Fresh evidence of global warming &#8211; as politicians question climate action\" title=\"Fresh evidence of global warming &#8211; as politicians question climate action\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"ui-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Fresh evidence today has set out how quickly the Earth&#8217;s climate is changing &#8211; in some places so fast it has shocked scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The new report arrives as the UK&#8217;s long-standing political consensus on tackling climate change fractures &#8211; with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/kemi-badenoch-says-uk-target-to-reach-net-zero-by-2050-impossible-13331102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">questioning the necessary pace of climate action<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; and as President Donald Trump seeks to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/trump-government-attempts-to-rip-up-31-environmental-protections-and-reviews-damage-of-greenhouse-gases-13327636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>scrap US climate rules<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new analysis from the United Nations&#8217;s World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) today found that 2024 was the hottest on records going back 175 years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-custom-markup \" data-component-name=\"sdc-article-custom-markup\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/visualisation\/21948969\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Each of the last 10 years has been in the top 10 warmest years on record &#8211; a trend that is unprecedented, as previously such a time period has always been punctuated by colder years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That has never happened before, going back to 1850,&#8221; said Prof Chris Hewitt, director of climate services at the WMO.<\/p>\n<p>The team were also shocked by the way the final months of 2024 remained hot, even as the natural warming effect of the transient <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/high-chance-of-cooling-la-nina-weather-pattern-brings-little-respite-for-surging-global-and-ocean-heat-13212809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>El Nino weather phenomenon subsided<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fact the &#8220;warmth continued for so long&#8221; even the world moved to more neutral conditions after El Nino has been &#8220;really quite extraordinary&#8221; said Dr John Kennedy, lead author of the WMO&#8217;s State of the Global Climate Report for 2024.<\/p>\n<p>It also found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Concentrations of carbon dioxide &#8211; the key driver of global warming &#8211; are at the highest levels in the last 800,000 years.<\/li>\n<li>Each of the past eight years has smashed new records for heat in the oceans<\/li>\n<li>The 18 lowest levels of sea ice in the Arctic in summer have all been in the past 18 years<\/li>\n<li>Glaciers have lost more ice in the last three years than in any other three-year period on record<\/li>\n<li>The rate of sea level rise has doubled since satellite measurements began.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-custom-markup \" data-component-name=\"sdc-article-custom-markup\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/visualisation\/21950298\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/21950298\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UK Met Office&#8217;s Prof Stephen Belcher said the earth is &#8220;profoundly ill. Many of the vital signs are sounding alarms&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the planet is &#8220;issuing more distress signals&#8221; and urged leaders to href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/donald-trump-to-wrench-us-out-of-landmark-paris-climate-agreement-again-13292953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>pulling the US out of the Paris Agreement<\/strong><\/a>, and Argentina <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/argentina-walks-away-from-cop29-amid-fears-trump-may-pull-us-out-of-paris-climate-deal-13253961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>walking away from global talks last year<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the UK&#8217;s climate envoy on Tuesday struck <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/climate-action-will-make-british-people-more-secure-says-uk-envoy-after-badenoch-claimed-it-would-hit-living-standards-13331329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>a more optimistic note<\/strong><\/a>, saying other countries are still talking about how to go green, not if they should.<\/p>\n<p>China, the world&#8217;s largest emitter, installed more wind and solar power last year than ever before, and in 2023 as much solar power as the world combined.<\/p>\n<p>But last year&#8217;s heat drove extreme weather events that forced more people from their homes than in any year since 2008, destroying critical infrastructure, forests, farmland and biodiversity too.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought
