Israeli forces advanced deeper into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday \u2014 seizing parts of a major corridor separating the enclave\u2019s northern half from the south \u2014 as Israel steadily ramped up pressure on Hamas after the cease-fire\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n

The operation followed a wide-scale Israeli aerial bombardment in Gaza the previous day that effectively ended the fragile truce that had held between Israel and Hamas since mid-January. Neither side was willing to meet the other\u2019s demands to extend the deal, free more hostages and end the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the Israeli military said soldiers had begun \u201ctargeted ground activities\u201d along the road \u2014 known as the Netzarim corridor \u2014 to create a \u201cpartial buffer zone\u201d between northern and southern Gaza. Another infantry brigade had also been dispatched to prepare for deployment into Gaza, the military said.<\/p>\n

Israeli forces had \u201cexpanded their control further to the center of the Netzarim corridor,\u201d the military said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
