While the <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/google\">Google<\/a> decision comes with the threat of financial penalties for non-compliance, the Apple action doesn&#8217;t directly lead to that outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me be clear: Our main focus is creating a culture of compliance\u201d with the DMA, Teresa Ribera, the EU&#8217;s antitrust chief said in a statement on the move against Google. The measure targeting Apple is an \u201cimportant step\u201d toward opening its ecosystem, she added.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Mountain View, California-based Google has faced growing EU scrutiny over its search business. Last year, it lost a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-10\/google-loses-eu-court-fight-to-overturn-2-4-billion-fine\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">court bid<\/a>\u00a0to topple a once-record \u20ac2.4 billion ($2.6 billion) fine for abusing its monopoly power to crush rival search shopping services. Apple has previously warned of the EU&#8217;s attempts to open up its iPhone and iPad operating systems, accusing rival Meta Platforms Inc. of attempting to gain access to its sensitive features in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-12-18\/eu-escalates-pressure-on-apple-to-open-up-its-features-to-rivals\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">move that raises<\/a>\u00a0\u201cconcerns about the privacy and security of users.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday&#8217;s decisions wrap us in red tape,\u201d Apple said in a statement. \u201cIt&#8217;s bad for our products and for our European users.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s previous claims that the privacy of European consumers were threatened by the EU law were later rebutted by Ribera at a Bloomberg event in Brussels. The Cupertino, California-based company is expected to be hit with a fine in the coming weeks for allegedly stymieing attempts by developers to offer cheaper subscriptions away from the App Store \u2014 a similar practice for which it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-04\/apple-hit-with-1-8-billion-eu-fine-over-abusive-app-store-rules\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">earlier was hit<\/a>\u00a0with EUR 1.8 billion (roughly Rs.\u00a016,912 crore)\u00a0fine. <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/meta\">Meta<\/a> is also poised to receive a decision over its subscription model for ad-free access to <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/facebook\">Facebook<\/a> and <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/instagram\">Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Any future EU penalties \u2014 be they aimed at Apple or Google \u2014 could be badly received by Trump, who&#8217;s repeatedly poured scorn on the bloc&#8217;s antitrust fines, saying they are tantamount to tariffs against the US. In an escalating tit-for-tat over tariffs, he&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-03-12\/trump-tariffs-on-steel-aluminum-take-effect-with-no-exemptions\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">already said<\/a>\u00a0the US will respond to the EU&#8217;s countermeasures against his new 25 percent tariffs on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/bulletins\/gd\/USDHSCBP-3d5e0fb?wgt_ref=USDHSCBP_WIDGET_2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">steel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/bulletins\/gd\/USDHSCBP-3d5e080?wgt_ref=USDHSCBP_WIDGET_2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">aluminum<\/a>, and any future EU fines are likely to be deemed by the White House as a provocation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>EU regulators are unlikely to be veered drastically off course by Trump&#8217;s threats.
