\u201cWe need to ensure trust and transparency when it comes to selection of partners. Where India\u2019s collaboration with Latin America and the Caribbean are concerned, there are some areas of special priority. As a result, first and foremost, our partnership must address the needs of health security,\u201d said Dr. S Jaishankar<\/a>, Minister of External Affairs, speaking on potential areas of further cooperation between India and the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region at the ongoing 10th CII India LAC Conclave held on Thursday in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

The Minister also emphasized on having closer cooperation between India and the LAC region on energy cooperation<\/a> stating that \u201cEnergy cooperation can be a two-way street.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further shared that \u201cIndian companies are active in power transmissions. They can also contribute to strengthening the renewable sector and perhaps even the civilian nuclear power in the future.\u201d He also spoke on India\u2019s initiative in promoting and advocating for alternative and renewable sources of energy through the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and Global Biofuels Alliance.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he emphasized the LAC region\u2019s strength in the agricultural sector and as a potential breadbasket for the entire world. The minister said, \u201cTo realise the full (agriculture) potential, there is need for better technology, for greater productivity, for logistics, for post-harvest storage, and for more food processing.\u201d He added that advancements in drones, nano fertilizers, and artificial intelligence applications can significantly improve the productivity and efficiency of the LAC agricultural sector and could serve as the basis of expanded India-LAC cooperation in the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n

He highlighted India\u2019s strength in digital public infrastructure (DPI) and its impact on governance and service delivery and shared that India \u201cwould be open to engaging in collaborative endeavors in the digital domain, so that its benefits could be availed by the Latin America and Caribbean region.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Minister also mentioned India\u2019s presence in the mining industries of several LAC countries and that continued and expanded partnerships on harvesting minerals such as lithium, aluminium, and other minerals relevant to semiconductors. Speaking about the global economy, Dr. Jaishankar noted that \u201cClearly there is a need to de-risk the global economy from the dangers of over-concentration in any single geography.\u201d He further added that \u201cwe need to build reliable and resilient supply chains\u201d and that there is a need for \u201ctrust and transparency when it comes to selection of partners.\u201d He further spoke on India\u2019s progress on infrastructure and India\u2019s significant progress in building roadways, railways, and air connectivity in India and that India could serve as a reliable partner for LAC countries on infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The Minister emphasized that India\u2019s startup and innovation culture have experienced significant growth in recent years, which could also serve as a potential area of cooperation between India and the LAC region. He also stated that India conducts overseas projects across the world, with many projects in the LAC region.<\/p>\n

R Mukundan, Vice President, Confederation of Indian Industry shared that the LAC conclave has acted as a bridge and facilitating interactions between Indian and LAC countries. He emphasized improving connectivity, collaboration on startups, technology cooperation through leveraging technology to deepen India\u2019s cooperation with the LAC region.<\/p>\n

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry highlighted key takeaways from the CII LAC Conclave<\/a>, including scaling cooperation on IT, pharmaceuticals, and the automotive industries. Furthermore, he also spoke on expanding educational and cultural partnerships with academic institutions in the LAC region to promote greater educational mobility. He added that India and LAC countries would work closer on renewable energy<\/a> solutions and green transition. Finally, he shared that both India and LAC should work closer on amplifying and reducing barriers for women to participate in the business sector.
