The victims, including pedestrians, bus stop commuters, and residents, sustained injuries in multiple locations. The stray dog was later beaten to death by one of the victims, a report in The Hindu stated.

Dog attack across multiple areas

The attacks began around 7 a.m. on Chala Koyode road, where the dog first bit pedestrians. It then moved through Poduvacheri, Iriveri, Panerichal, Muzhappala, Chakkarakkal town, Chakkarakkal Sona road, and Chirakkat, attacking people along the way. Victims were bitten while walking, waiting at bus stops, or standing in front of their homes.

Injured victims receive treatment

Several victims suffered serious injuries. T. K. Ramachandran from Iriveri sustained severe facial injuries and was admitted to a private hospital in Chala. Three others sought treatment at Kannur Medical College Hospital in Anjarakandy, while the remaining victims were taken to Kannur district hospital.

Stray dog killed by an injured person

Shaji (50), one of the victims, killed the stray dog after being attacked. Anjarakandy panchayat member K. P. Lohithakshan and District Medical Officer Piyus Namboothiripad visited the hospital to assess the situation and meet the injured.

20 attacked by stray dogs in Trichy

In a separate incident, at least 20 residents in Manapparai town, Trichy district, have reported being bitten by stray dogs in the past two days. The affected areas include Rajiv Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, and Masthan Street near the Manapparai bus stand. Victims claim that stray dogs, which previously chased two-wheelers at odd hours, have now started attacking pedestrians.

Live Events

Growing stray dog population

Manapparai municipality, which consists of 27 wards and around 11,000 households, last recorded the stray dog population at 892. However, residents believe the number is higher, estimating that each ward has between 50 and 100 stray dogs.

Concerns over aggressive behavior

Residents attribute the increase in stray dog attacks to rising temperatures and food shortages. “As the temperature picks up, stray dogs are becoming aggressive. Previously, they were only chasing the two-wheelers at odd hours, but now they are attacking passersby as well. Shortage of food is another reason for dogs’ aggressive behaviour,” said S Sudhan, a resident of Manapparaipatti Road. In the past two days, around 15 individuals bitten by stray dogs have received treatment at Manapparai GH.

Animal birth control initiative delayed

Residents have also expressed concern over the inaction of the municipality’s animal birth control (ABC) centre, which has remained inactive since the pandemic.

The Manapparai municipality recently allocated Rs 15 lakh for an animal birth control drive. However, the program is yet to start. “We will expedite and appoint veterinarians to revive the mechanism to contain the stray dog population,” said Geetha A Maickelraj, chairman of Manapparai municipality.

Authorities urged to act

With stray dog attacks becoming a safety concern, residents are urging the local authorities to take immediate action to implement the ABC program and ensure public safety.

(Inputs from TOI)

Source link

A suspected rabid dog attacked more than 35 people across Anjarakandy and Chembilode panchayats in Kannur, Kerala, on Thursday.
