Guwahati: With several organisations, including the proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-Independent), opposing the Bihar Diwas celebrations<\/a> in Tinsukia, the ruling BJP in Assam has cancelled the programme scheduled for March 22.<\/p>\n

In Sibsagar, Assam, protests were held against the proposed event.<\/p>\n

Assam Pradesh BJP President Dilip Saikia stated that for several years, the NDA-led Central Government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and its allied parties have been celebrating the foundation days of various states as part of the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Sneha Milan Utsav. This initiative aims to foster unity, harmony, goodwill, and a sense of diversity across India. Several states, including Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Mizoram, and Nagaland, have already celebrated “Assam Day.” Similarly, Assam has commemorated the foundation days of states such as Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Sikkim.<\/p>\n

Saikia stated that in response to requests from various organisations, the Bihar State Foundation Day programme scheduled in Tinsukia has been cancelled. However, he reaffirmed that such state foundation day celebrations play a crucial role in strengthening national unity and harmony.<\/p>\n

He further emphasised that just as Assam\u2019s Assam Day, celebrated annually on December 2, is warmly welcomed by other states, the celebration of Bihar\u2019s Foundation Day in Assam also deserves equal respect and acceptance. He urged people to view the occasion from a cultural perspective rather than a political standpoint.<\/p>\n

Saikia also highlighted Bihar\u2019s rich cultural heritage, mentioning the 500-year-old spiritual significance of Bodh Gaya and the prestigious Nalanda University, which once educated over 10,000 students across 70 disciplines. He stressed that these historical connections between Bihar, Assam, and other Indian states have existed in the past, continue in the present, and will endure in the future.The Paresh Baruah-led ULFA (Independent), in a statement, alleged that preparations were underway to celebrate Bihar Diwas in Tinsukia under the patronage of certain individuals, including BJP MLAs Suren Phukan and Sanjoy Kishan.\u201cThis is an attack on the culture, heritage, and pride of the indigenous people,\u201d ULFA stated.<\/p>\n

The outfit further declared, \u201cULFA (Independent) opposes the observance of Bihar Day on indigenous land. We demand the immediate cancellation of this event by all concerned parties, both local and outsiders. If this directive is ignored and the event proceeds, the consequences will be dire. The responsibility for any unfortunate situation that arises will lie solely with the organisers and their supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opposition party Raijor Dal also opposed the move, linking it to the BJP\u2019s vote-bank politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe oppose the BJP and its government\u2019s decision to celebrate Bihar Diwas in Assam. There is no rationale for celebrating Bihar Diwas here. We have never seen Bihar celebrating Assam Divas,\u201d Raijor Dal chief and MLA Akhil Gogoi said.<\/p>\n

However, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticised those opposing the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany have asked whether Assam Diwas is celebrated outside Assam. I want to clarify that it is celebrated in several states today. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat observe Assam Divas in the presence of their governors. If Bihar celebrates Assam Divas and we celebrate Bihar Diwas, it will only strengthen mutual understanding. So, there is no point in politicising the issue,\u201d Sarma said.<\/p>\n

He further stated that such a mindset had discouraged industries from investing in Assam for a long time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a message goes out that Assam is against Biharis, Marwaris, Gujaratis, and Tamils, how will the youth of Assam find job opportunities outside the state?\u201d he questioned.
