The visit marks a long-standing tradition of gratitude for the Zamorin’s role in defending the Mishkal Mosque from a Portuguese attack in 1510, a TOI report by Rajeev KR stated.

Remembering the Defense of Mishkal Mosque

In 1510, Portuguese forces led by Afonso de Albuquerque attempted to burn down the Mishkal Mosque. The Zamorin dispatched a 500-member army, largely comprising Nair warriors, to defend it. Though part of the mosque was damaged, the combined resistance of local Muslims and the Zamorin’s forces helped protect the site.

Tribute to the Present-Day Zamorin

This year, members of various Kuttichira organizations, including descendants of the Qazi family, the mosque committee, and the Qazi Foundation, will visit K C Unni Anujan Raja, the current titular Zamorin, at his residence in Thiruvanoor. The delegation, led by acting Qazi of Kozhikode and Qazi of Mishkal Mosque Safeer Saqafi, will present him with a memento in recognition of this shared history.

Symbolic Retribution and Reconstruction

The Zamorin later captured the Portuguese Chaliyam Fort in 1571 and used its remnants to rebuild the mosque. Historian P Sivadasan emphasized the event’s significance, stating, “The Zamorin’s forces were able to crush the Portuguese in 1571 and capture Chaliyam Fort, which was the first defeat suffered by Europeans in India. The fort was dismantled and, in a symbolic gesture, the Zamorin provided timber from the fort to repair Mishkal Mosque.”

A Tradition of Communal Harmony

M V Ramsi Ismail, a descendant of the Qazi family and general secretary of the Qazi Foundation, highlighted the importance of continuing this tradition. “The visit is a reaffirmation of our social bonds of togetherness and harmony. We have been following it for the past decade to ensure the history of camaraderie does not get drowned in present-day controversies,” he said.

Live Events

Ismail also noted that the Portuguese attack on the mosque was an attempt to create divisions between Arabs and the Zamorins. He pointed out that Kuttichira remains a Muslim neighborhood with places of worship from other communities, including Shri Bhagwan Kalikund Parshvanath Jain Temple and the Gujarati Temple. “The communities have been living in amity,” he said.

Preserving a Shared Legacy

The annual visit stands as a testament to Kerala’s history of cultural coexistence. In the present context, where disputes over religious sites have been on the rise, the commemoration of the Mishkal-Zamorin bond reinforces the region’s legacy of communal harmony.

Source link

Representatives from the Muslim community in Kuttichira, Kerala, will visit the descendants of the Zamorins, former Hindu rulers of Malabar, on Sunday, the 22nd day of Ramzan.
