Karla Sofia Gascon, best known for her role in\u00a0Emilia Perez<\/em><\/a>, was in the midst of an Oscar campaign for Best Actress when her \u201cracist\u201d tweets resurfaced online. Following the backlash, she withdrew from the spotlight for a while and ultimately lost the award to Mikey Madison for\u00a0Anora<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Recently, Karla Sofia Gascon appeared in Madrid to promote her biographical book\u00a0Lo que queda de mi<\/em>\u00a0(What’s Left of Me<\/em>). In a conversation with\u00a0El Mundo<\/em>, the actress addressed the racism controversy.<\/p>\n

When asked whether she felt she had been forgiven for her racist tweets, Karla responded, “No one has to forgive me for anything. If anyone feels offended by things I may have done\u00a0in my life, let them come and tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cThey’ve said that I’m far-right or racist or whatever, but if there’s one thing I’ve done all my life, it’s that I’ve been against all this. When I was young, I used to fight with skinheads \u2026 When someone comes up to me and I ask them: \u2018But what is it about me that offends you?’, no one can come up with anything or tell me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karla Sofia Gascon declared herself to be \u201cless racist than Gandhi\u201d but did not elaborate on the statement.<\/p>\n

She suggested that she may have been the target of a deliberate smear campaign\u00a0aimed at derailing\u00a0her career. \u201cIt’s clear that there was a campaign against me and that they kept going until they got what they were after,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Addressing her Islamophobic tweets targeting the Muslim population, Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n stated that while she has \u201cenormous respect for Muslim people,\u201d she has no tolerance for \u201cfanaticism, terrorism, and all the awful things done in the name of God or religion.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked whether she had any regrets or would make the same choices again, Karla Sofia Gascon responded, \u201cLife always puts us into difficult places so that we can learn. And you always learn from mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the unversed, Karla Sofia Gascon<\/a>‘s controversial tweets, largely shared during a volatile period in\u00a0both\u00a0global politics and social movements, resurfaced on the internet on January 30.\u00a0The actress\u00a0had\u00a0made several posts criticising\u00a0a variety of\u00a0subjects, including Islam, the Black Lives Matter movement and George Floyd.<\/p>\n
