Even a slight delay means getting caught in one of the city’s worst traffic bottlenecks.

“Yeh toh sapna hai ki main ek ride ke baad doosri bhi le sakun (It’s unimaginable that I can drive there and then drive back)!” Satish told TOI. “After 6pm, I stop taking customers because everyone — airport passengers, Dwarka commuters, Gurgaon office-goers — is stuck on this one road.”

Siddhartha, 39, moved from Gurgaon to Noida because of the unbearable commute. His wife’s daily travel time ballooned to five hours, while his own work required him to constantly travel across the NCR.

“It isn’t just the peak-hour jams anymore — it’s chaos all day,” he said. Leaving early didn’t help either. “Even at 7am, the roads are packed. Cars just try to squeeze through everywhere because there are no proper entry or exit lanes,” he added while speaking to TOI. He jokingly mentioned, “It’s faster for me to fly from Delhi to Mumbai than to drive from Noida to the airport.”

The authorities are finally paying attention. A recent report from TOI revealed that Delhi’s chief secretary Dharmendra held a meeting with various agencies to address the traffic nightmare.

Live Events

A road safety committee has been formed to look into the issue, consult experts, and suggest fixes, with the Dhaula Kuan-Gurgaon stretch being considered for a pilot project.

Social media creates a buzz

Social media is flooded with daily complaints from commuters.

“NH-48-Traffic not moving at all near the toll plaza. Massive 60-70+ min jam from Gurgaon-Delhi border to Dhaula Kuan. Anyone accountable? Or just watching the show?” one post read.

Another user pleaded, “@dtptraffic @NHAI_Official Please find a permanent solution to this jam! 30-minute standstill every day except weekends. Why?”

One frustrated commuter highlighted the “suffering of lakhs of daily commuters” and asked, “Where’s the plan for Dwarka-Gurgaon-Dhaula Kuan metro connectivity?”

Traffic officials estimate around five lakh vehicles pass through this section daily. When TOI visited, it observed the traffic crawling at just 20 kmph on a flyover designed for 70 kmph during rush hour.

From above, the stretch looks like a bumper car game — only no one is enjoying it.

The chaos can be traced back to flawed road engineering at three key points — Shankar Vihar, Hotel Lohia, and Shiv Murti, said TOI.

These “scissor cuts,” where vehicles enter and exit the carriageway, create a significant disruption to the flow of traffic.

At Shankar Vihar, vehicles exiting must merge with those coming from the Dwarka underpass and Rao Tula Ram Marg. This creates a bottleneck that causes a slowdown. The same issue occurs at Hotel Lohia and Shiv Murti.

Even a small delay in one vehicle can lead to a 10-minute traffic jam. Despite the presence of police officers, traffic remains chaotic. Without them, it would be far worse.

Official thoughts on the problem

The National Highway Authority of India and traffic police are considering separating the entry and exit points by 100 meters to reduce the congestion. “If we make dedicated exit and entry lanes, it will ease the bottleneck significantly,” confirmed a traffic officer.

But the problem isn’t just the road design. The sheer volume of vehicles coming from Mahipalpur Bypass, Rangpuri, Dwarka, Gurgaon, Jaipur, and the airport only adds to the mess.

S Velmurugan, chief scientist at CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, explained that vehicles from six different directions merge into just three lanes at the Dhaula Kuan interchange, noted the report.

This, combined with additional vehicles from Vasant Vihar and Rao Tula Ram Marg, leads to congestion, especially at Shankar Vihar where the four lanes narrow to three.

“Clearly, volume is a major issue here. Another elevated carriageway is needed to handle the traffic flow,” Velmurugan told TOI. He also mentioned that while addressing the scissor cuts could offer some relief, the problem is far bigger and requires alternative routes and long-term solutions.

Source link

Every evening at 5:30, autorickshaw driver Satish rushes from Dhaula Kuan to the Gurgaon-Delhi border, trying to avoid the chaos that follows.
