The latest such move is by Flipkart’s cofounder Binny Bansal and CaratLane’s founder Mithun Sacheti who have become anchor LPs (limited partners) in Xeed Ventures.

Driving the news: Xeed Ventures, an early-stage fund run by Sailesh Tulshan, which was formerly known as 021 Capital, has also roped in Premji Invest as an LP. The investment committee (IC) for Xeed will consist of Tulshan, Bansal and Sacheti. Xeed is aiming to make a final close of Rs 600 crore and has already snagged 70% of the target corpus, according to people in the know.

Go deeper: While Bansal is a sponsor in a dozen other funds, Sacheti, who sold 27% stake in CaratLane to Titan for Rs 4,621 crore last year, has been actively deploying capital across different vehicles. It has already closed a few investments like direct-to-consumer brand Charcoal.inc, and financial services startup Kredit.pe.

Besides Bansal and Sacheti, there are other founders who have also deployed cash,” said a person aware of the matter.

Founders turn funders: The list of influential founders who have floated or backed funds include:

Zerodha’s Nikhil Kamath (Gruhas)

Udaan’s Sujeet Kumar, Flipkart group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy (LPs in Tanglin Venture Partners)

Freshworks’ Girish Mathrubootham and Eka Software founder Manav Garg (Together Fund)

Amrish Rau, CEO, Pine Labs and Jitendra Gupta, founder, Jupiter (LPs in White Venture Capital)

Myntra and Curefit founder Mukesh Bansal (Meraki Labs)

Snapdeal founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal (Titan Capital)

Small towns, retail investors central to fintech’s AMC business

New-generation fintech startups like Groww, Zerodha and Navi are building a new line of business: asset management. While their size is puny compared to their traditional peers, these are early days for new-generation fintechs.

Quote, unquote: “There are only 4.2 crore unique PAN holders investing in the market, but there are 85 crore ecommerce users in the country. There is a large market beyond the metros which needs passive investing options,” said Vishal Jain, chief executive officer, Zerodha Fund House.

Challenges stacked: Generating revenue through passive investing is tough, given a fund is dependent on the larger indices for returns.

Secondly, there is severe competition among players who can undercut each other in terms of pricing. Finally, in India how many people have the disposable income to invest in mutual funds continues to be a big question mark.

In a family, there might be multiple people buying on Amazon, but there is typically only one person who is investing in the stock markets, so there is debate on the potential size of the market, according to some sections of the industry.

Interview: TCS CEO on India opportunity, mega deal wins and more

India’s largest software services exporter Tata Consultancy Services is excited about opportunities in its home market driven by big deal wins. So, we will actually be increasing our focus (there), the CEO said.

Demand revival: The pain in the sector is “bottoming out” since key verticals of banking and financial services have not shrunk significantly even as demand remains under stress. “I don’t want to call out if it will happen or turn positive in the immediate quarter, but in the medium term we are becoming more optimistic,” he said in a post-earnings conversation.

Q4 recap: TCS said its net profit grew 9.1% on year at Rs 12,434 crore in the final quarter of financial year 2024, beating expectations.
